Oil leak on new F250 Powerstroke ( 2005)

Hey guys,

I need some input on this. I noticed yesterday that I had a small amount of oil on the garage floor. I got up under the truck with my flashlight and noted quite a bit of oil on the underside of the engine. I think I located the point of origin which is just behind the harmonic balancer ( I think that is what it's called). There is a recessed looking plug, I am guessing about a 3/4 inch allen driver would fit it. The oil looks to be coming from there. I have read some earlier posts about rear main seals, and I have also hear mention of a front main seal. Where is this located, or is the place I am trying to describe the location of the front main seal. I have about 8000 miles on the truck. I purchased it about a month ago and have taken a very long trip. I have not towed anything, just driving down the highway. Any input on this would be greatly appreciated.

Regards,

John Curry

I think your looking at the crankshaft position sensor (CKP) . It's not uncommon for it to leak from the factory. You'll have to take it back to the dealer to have them fix it. From what I hear, it's real fun to replace the o-ring on the CKP.

Re: Oil leak on new F250 Powerstroke ( 2005)

If the engine was made at the Indy plant between about Thanksgiving '04 and the beginning of February '05, it's probably (okay, most likely) a front main seal. The plug with the 12mm hex socket is for the lube oil pump PRV. Since it's the low point, stuff from the front main wanders down there and drips off it. Your dealer may just reseal the PRV cap (because it's a 10-minute fix), but you'll be paying him another visit 'cause it probably won't stop the problem.

Me, too. Front main seal, for sure. My dealer found the o-ring for that plug leaking as well, but they fixed it all the first time- it took one day to get the parts, and one day to fix it. Don't le them jack you around or you will be taking it back several times. It's the front main, and they know it. They'll try to placate you with half-ass quick-fixes if you let them.

How long was your truck in the sick bay to have the seal replaced? 1 day or more?

I have the dye in the oil now and have to take it on next Monday next week to hopefully have the leak fixed. I have been patient with the dealer so far. I have already had the PVR replaced.
