Oil Pressure Gauge drops to zero at Idle

A friend has a 2004 6.0 with a strange problem, anyone heard of this before? Truck runs fine, but all of a sudden sitting at a stoplight the oil pressure gauge will drop to zero and the CEL comes on, then the engine quits. Restarts right away as if nothing happened. I know the engine needs oil to run the injectors, but do you think it is actually a bottom end engine problem or a sender/computer issue? Buddy has been drivin like this for a couple weeks, he just pops it into neutral at stoplights now.

Re: Oil Pressure Gauge drops to zero at Idle

Possibly a low pressure oil pump problem. I would tee a pressure guage in with the oil pressure switch just to be sure. If it is weak it might not be able to supply the hpop with oil. Or possibly the relief for the low pressure pump might have a problem.

Get that truck in to Grampy Jim. PM him for his location. He's a 6.0 whiz!

Re: Oil Pressure Gauge drops to zero at Idle

We'd love to, but Grampy is about an 8 hour drive north of here! The local dealer had a look at this truck about three months ago because it was losing coolant like crazy and blowing white smoke (steam) at startup. They told him it was head gaskets and quoted $5000 for the job. He didn't have that kinda cash at the time, so the truck sat for a while, and then I read here on the good 'ol DieselStop about EGR cooler failure and that seemed to match his symptoms better that Head gaskets, so we popped out the EGR valve and sure enough, it was all wet! So we grabbed a used egr cooler off of my old overheated 6.0 from a couple years ago, and spent a saturday (and a couple dozen cool ones)changing it out. Problem solved, no coolant loss now! Thanks to TDS!

Truck ran fine for about a month, now this oil pressure problem. I think we'll check oil pressure with a gauge first, maybe swap sending units as we have a complete overheated 6.0 sittin here collecting dust.

He's running a Superchips 1704 Tuner and a cat back dual exhaust, 4" lift w/35s, stock otherwise.

Re: Oil Pressure Gauge drops to zero at Idle

More than likely it is the sending unit or the connection itself. The sending unit is an on-off switch that sends the gauge(idiot light with a needle) to the middle. A break in the circuit will send the gauge to zero and shut down the truck. Try just unplugging the sending unit and checking the connection for corrosion..
