oil pump grenaded

Has anyone heard of the oil pump exploding, mine just did.

Inner gear was in 6 peices, outer gear cracked which cracked the oil pump/water pump housing.

Cost to get fixed 2285.

Runs like a champ

truck has 65,500 miles, never had any issues except normal EGR valves, two replaced under warranty.

I would insert picture but cant figure out how.

You must have been redlining it pretty high. Most LPOP failures are caused by high RPMs and heavy engine stress.

^^^^ that was my first thought as well....but I wonder if something got in there and "jammed" the oil pump gear causing everything to shatter.

I was driving to work about half way i did a full throttle pull in first gear, with my Bully Dog Power Pup at 100%. I dont think i redlined but i may have. Under acceleration i heard a squeel and the engine just shut down.

I have been going pretty easy on it since i got it back, so far so good. Havent reinstalled the programming yet, will wait a week or two.

You can check out my photo's for the carnage

What year was the truck? I have heard of a handful of oil pump failures on 03, early 04 trucks with the "smaller" water pump/front cover.

There was some discussion on competitiondiesel.com about the use of Fluidampers causing oil pump failures, but in the end the general conclusion was that most people running Fluidampers were really pushing their trucks harder, which led to premature oil pump failures. Most of these failures were in earlier (03 to early 04) trucks.
