Oil stand pipe confusion - please help

I changed my oil yesterday and when I removed my filter from the housing the little black "button" if you will, that sits on the top came out with it. By looking at how it works it seems like the pressure from pushing the new filter on and screwing the cap down will hold it where its supposed to be unitl I change the oil again. Anyone familiar with this and does this sound ok? It seems like there is nowhere for it to go and has just come unattached, but wanted to make sure. Also, just switched to Mobil 1 synthetic for the first time (always conventional but having stiction issues) so I will write up a little review as I know some of you are wondering if its worth the jump.

ok, you are talking about the oil bypass post, has the spring on it. The black post that the oil filter goes over. Mine broke when I pushed too hard on it. Ok, Ok, I pushed it to see how springy it was and guess what, "snap", the little "button" broke leaving a fragment at the bottom of the oil filter housing. Luckily I was doing an oil cooler replacement. I don't know if the functionality of the post and oil flow is compromised for you or not, but I usually tend to err on the side of caution. Replace it. They are about $55 bucks from the dealer. Sorry, don't have the part number. It is one screw on the aft side and a slight turn to take it out. You will need a long extention to get down into the oil filter housing. Good luck.

Thanks guys.
Question, is that little plastic piece that broke supposed to hold the spring down, like stay under tension? Or does it still just sit there? Trying to see how it actually works.

You may have some damage from an aftermarket filter such as the Wix with the taller cap etc. Use an oem cap and an oem filter. Don't cram the filter down then try to run the cap in on top of it. Plug the oem filter in the oem cap then carefully lower the assy on to the plastic pipe assy and screw the cap down gently til you have it tightened to specs. The bottom of the filter housing may also have trash from abuse from plastic adapters etc used with aftermarket filters.
