I have an '04 F-450 6.0 and was pulling my fifth-wheel. The load was about 17k. I was getting on the freeway and was up to about 40 mph and there was no pull at all. Got it up to about 50 mph and 3300 rpm when it shifted into fifth, I think. It dropped down to 2500 rpm and suddenly started pulling again. It is a pig on the hills with no power.
Had it into the dealer about 100 miles before the problem. Called the dealer and they could not give me any help. I had no warning lights on the dash, no indication that anything was wrong other than loss of power. Can hear air noise in the right front dash that normally isn't there.

I'm thinking I do as it pulls OK at lower speeds and I don't see a lot of black smoke out the pipes. It's just that 40- 50 range. I don't have gauages in the truck to tell me, if and how much. It's all stock and never had any problems so far. If you hit a hill, it just doesn't pull like it use to. Before I take it to the dealer , I thought it would be good to get some input to what the problem might be.
Leaky boot, most likely at the turbo from what you're describing.

Great , Thanks, I'll get it checked out.
I had all sorts of bad feelings and this makes me feel a lot better. I'm new to this stuff , so really appricate the input

It certainly sounds like the short boot off the Turbo to metal CAC hose is cracked to me. I had the same problem last year and found the boot cracked open on the bottom at the lower clamp leaking oil and boost. I replaced the boot and everything was good.

I have a simular problem with my 07 Harley. When towing under load up hills- it is gutless. It makes the same power from 1/2 throttle to full throttle- no change. Also makes a wierd pulsing noise when under load and full throttle. There seems to be boost though,(about 28 lbs) just no power.Does indeed sound like poster Wildbills issue, any other thoughts? Any resolution Wildbill? Thanks. .
.
PS- new fuel filters , air filter.
Addition to above post- after reading this thread I checked my blue rubber turbo tube connecters, and found the lower to be very oily. I took it off and did not find any cracks or pinholes. There was a fair bit of oil in the tube itself, along with lots of oil in the rubber connecter as well. Cleaned and reinstalled nice and tight.
Could it just have been loose? Whats with the oilly film all over the bottom connection? Haven't yet been able to put it under load to see it it helped. Thanks again.
The oil is most likely from your CCV line into the turbo inlet tube. This is why I rerouted my CCV vent line. Many folks just vent it to the air under the truck near the back, but it drips oil and can be messy. I routed mine through a frame rail filter and then back to the turbo inlet tube. I am getting quite a bit of oil out of the filter (it is a coalescing filter and the long vertical runs to and from the filter help with added disengaging time).
I think this and the coolant filter have been my two best mods (but I also love having a harpooned fuel tank!)
Thanks Wildbill. Looking forward to hereing if that helps. Also wondering if there may be pinholes in the blue rubber connector boot that I couldn't see when I inspected. Maybe they open up when under high boost and bleed off power?
I'm grasping at straws here - but it very frustrating when towing. It has great power down low through about 20 psi boost, then at a hill when towing and put your foot into it and build max boost, it just doesn't have any more jam. As mentioned previously, it doesn't make any more power from 1/2 way or so to all the way to the floor. Anyway, thanks for any help.
