Power loss while towing with wrench light on

My cousin just bought an 05 6.0 and he has a pace america 20 ft covered trailer with a flat nose. He test drove it into the wind and when he went to pass someone it had good power till about 3200 or 3500 rpm and then it would cut out and loose horse power like the brake was on. The wrench light came on and stayed on. I test drove it today and got it to do the same thing so I stopped it on the side of the freeway and turned the truck off. I turned it back on and the light was off and the truck was back to normal. I'm thinking this might be a normal thing that the computer does to save the truck from hurting itself but not sure. Anyone know if this is normal or not? The rpm is between 3200 and 3500 at about 73 t0 75 miles an hour. Its a dually with 3.73 gears. Thanks.

see if you can post any codes...It sounds like the egr valve may have stuck open and it may have overboosted for a time sending the truck into limp mode...depending on the flash=the last one,it may be because of the difference in delta temps(ie)oil vs coolant temps may have been exceeded...b

Basically, the truck de-rated for one reason or another. You'll need to have it diagnosed to figure out why.

Mine did the samething on Friday and today on my way home from Pismo. The wrench light it the "Electronic throttle control" according the owners manual. It says that it goes into limp mode when the light comes on. Cycling the key will make it turn off. I called the dealer on Friday and they said the most common cause was the throttle pedal loses communications with the PCM. I'm going to try and take it in this week.

Thanks guys. I did put a reader on it but it didn't throw a code. Just the wrench light. I'll try taking it to the dealership

I took mine in and they said it was the baro sensor. I know a guy that works on the gas side and told me the guy working on my truck was the best on the diesel side. So we will see what happens when I put some miles on it. I also was told that my ESP warranty has expired.

The high delta will not detune the motor to limp mode...only show a wrench light when the difference is too great...

I lost power on the highway, just like it missed or something, it then went into limp mode.....I limped it home, backed it into the drive , turned it off and then restarted and the wench and service engine soon light came on. I moved recently and the closest Dealer is 50 miles away, I do have ESP Roadside assistance with my 200,000 SD Diesel Enginecare ( which has paid for itself ), do I try and drive it in in the morning or get Ford to put it on a Flat Bed and take it to the ford Dealer. I have 164,000 mi on it.

If you have tow coverage then put it on the hook and let them take care of it. No sense risking additional damage or ending up stranded on the highway.

To give you all an update on my truck......I had it towed on a flatbed to the nearest Ford, or so I thought by Ford's website, later I found out I had one closer with 3 diesel mech. But anyhow, the one I took it to put the computer on it and said the ICP and connecter was bad, so $450 later I was told that it was driveable but it was still not up to bar and they wanted it back in next week.....I told them I would need a rental when I brought it in and they gave me a song and dance they didn't and wouldn't have one....So I paid for my truck and drove almost 2 blocks, when my wife mentioned she wanted to go to Wally World before we headed home, so I pulled a Uey in a parking lot and pulled out from a stop sign to get across a divided highway, in the middle of the oncoming lanes the truck just puked out and the wrench came back on we barely managed to get it back to the Ford Dealer......at 4:45pm....I was blowing a CORK by the time I hit the Service Desk........Told them I had waited all day for them to firgure it out and apparently they replaced parts that didn't need to be replaced because it's running the same or worse then what it was running when I came in.....Lo and behold they produced a rental car out of thin air free of charge and unlimited mileage.....we will see what tomorrow brings....

The called today and said the coolant overflow was leaking and dripping on sensors that made it loose power and it was never the ICP and they had fixed it, I'll test drive it and make sure it drives fine before I give their rental back. I will also make them write an order out explaining the problem they said they fixed, I was having a bad cell connection when they called so I only heard every other word but they did say it was done. I'll report back on the final out come.

First time I've heard that one.

If that's what happened, find out what exactly was leaking or dripping. Cracked tank, hose, or spewing out the cap. The tanks have been known to crack. But coolant spewing out the cap could be a big concern.
