PowerSteering Fluid, Type ?

I just finnished cutting out a rusted section of p/s cooling lines , replaced with good quality rubber.

I looked in the owners man , and the supplimental little 6.o book in the glove box. Did not find the type.

I put in 2qts of type F , to test my "fix" out.

thank you , 24hrsparkey

The type F should be fine. It isn't a C-4/C-6 but it should not make a difference. Where did you find a quart of type F? I am using Mercon V because i have a couple quarts left over from my 2002 Excursion....

The owner's manual reads;

CHECKING AND ADDING POWER STEERING FLUID
Check the power steering fluid.
Refer to the scheduled maintenance
guide for the service interval
schedules. If adding fluid is
necessary, use only MERCON ATF.

If you need an owner's manual you can get it from;

I know all about Mercon SP only in the 44B auto transmission , from this site , changing the little aux filter , and replacing $220 worth of rusted trans cooler lines. By the way that job was a biatch.

Back to my power steering re fill after repairing those rusted lines.
I put Napa ATF recomended for vehicles requiring DEXTRON3 or Mercon Fluid. Not Recomended where Ford M2C33-F is required. Only thing i had. Now my brake pedle feels different , even after 50+ miles and i was wondering if my fluid choice did it.

As time permits in between fixing other stuff on this truck , YES i'll probl drain and re fill with the correct V fluid , now that i know that is what is required.
thank you . 24hrsparkey.

Edit . I seem to even confuse myself on these fluids, sorry.
Did I use the correct stuff or not ?

I bought my mercon V at Pep boys. I would think if they have it that AZ, Kragen or Napa would have it.

I used Valvoline DEX/MERC ATF when I flushed my power steering fluid. It's about $4/qt at your local auto parts store.

If you put DEX3/MERCON in you are good to go, If type F was used you might want to change it. You do not need MERCON 5

OK .
The Manual says Mercon ATF , for adding or re fill .

So far there are way too many kinds of red stuff for me to mentally grasp. I'm not the britest bulb on the tree.

Which flavor of Mercon is assumed to being the correct flavor in the manual stating " Ues only Mercon ATF" for power steering
Mercon SP
Mercon 5
Mercon
Dextron 3

Does Mercon indicate synthetic , or the designation abc,123 ect ?

I know the SP is syn. and the V can be bought in syn. or non-syn.

Not a probl sir ,, Hell i confused myself on the diff types !!

In all honesty i put in 1 Type F ( old from my garage ) and 1 mercon/dextronIII.

It works , but i agree NOT the best of mixing choices. As time permits i'll buy several Mercon/dextronIII and flush and fill with that manual recomended fluid.
I do thank you all for your help.
