The "eye" is meant for predelivery inspection only.... as the battery "cycles" matter is freed from the plates (along with any manufacturing debris that may be left behind)and some of these particles can become lodged in the green eye/red eye crap.

This green eye/red eye thing is simply a couple of coloured balls floating in a tube... If specific gravity of the electrolyte is high, you might see the green ball..... if specific gravity is low you might see the red ball - but only if these little boogers haven't been trapped by some small piece of flotsam or jetsam.

Once the battery has been in service, the only sure testing has nothing to do with the colour of the eye...
