Question ???

Hi Everyone,
Been a member here for almost four years but I have mostly been an occasional lurker. So, before anyone starts to chew me out because this question has been answered here a nimber of times in the past, keep in mind this is only my 5th post.

My question is what causes farting. In case I can't say that here then let's call it pharting. Where does it come from? I have had my truck in for warranty work quite a few times and everytime they have worked on it they ended up changing the TC with exception of the time the head gasket blew and they changed the head bolts on both sides. On every occasion except the head gasket one of the symptoms was pharting.

Overboost. With a VGT turbo, there is no waste gate or blow off valve. In a high boost quick drop off, the extra air has no place to go, except back down the intake.

Exactly what OMCUSNR said...On the 7.3s, or any engine with a wastegated turbo for that matter, the purpose of the wastegate was to relieve excess boost...With a VGT turbo such as the one on the 6.0, when you have the foot on the gas, or accelerate hard, and than let off of it, that extra pressure has no where to go, thus making that farting noise...Some people will tell you its bad for your turbo, its not.

I don't follow. Why don't the pressure go into and through the engine just as it was a split second before? It's not like there is a throttle plate that closes or something to keep the what's called "excess" from going on about it's normal merry way.

I thought the "farting" was because of a sensed overboost condition by the PCM because something is amiss. The PCM, upon detecting the overboost, releases the oil pressure on the VGT suddenly which allows the pressure to backflow through the airfilter making a whoose(fart) sound. Normally the PCM raises and lowers the oil pressure on the VGT smoothly to increase or decrease boost pressure, so it doesn't make the noise normally.

Anyway, farting is bad umkay. If it's farting, umkay, someting is amiss and needs to be looked at, umkay.
