Question about alternator/charging........

Guys,

I noticed that when I first start my 6.0, based on the speed of the wipers, windows, and blower fan, that the alternator doesn't kick in for several seconds. I suspect this because after several seconds, which can range from 5-20, I can notice the speed of the wipers and windows and fan speed suddenly increase to a "normal" level.

Is this normal, or should the alternator kick in immediately once the engine turns over?

I'm not having any problems - the truck is running fine and I have no problems starting.

Thanks,
CMOS

Re: Question about alternator/charging........

It's normal CMOS. The glow plugs will pull down the system voltage for up to 120 seconds.

Re: Question about alternator/charging........

The glow plugs are still drawing current even after the dash indicator icon goes out?

Re: Question about alternator/charging........

Yep. They run for up to two minutes after you turn the truck on.

Re: Question about alternator/charging........

The alternator is computer controlled and comes on when all of the parameters of the computer's programming are met. It takes a bit. The glow plugs are the biggest drain on the system, as noted.
