I have a 2005 King Ranch CC dually with a 6.0 diesel
the thing I have been noticing is at idle the diesel engine
sound would get very quite then get louder then get quite again.
and this would cycle like this several times. I also would hear this
several times while driving at a steady rpm. What might be happening? Is there anything I should worry about? Also there are no engine codes or any driveability issues at this time. And I also have the original computer program as new, with no reflashes. BTW truck is completely Stock, no aftermarket anything.
Thanks for any help you might have.
I have noticed this on mine and several others. It seems like it gets loud when the AC compressor kicks in. I assume its a fuel injector thing of some kind. Normal as far as i can tell. I am pretty sure i know what you are talking about.
ON the '04's wiht the bad EB sensor that;s what it would sound like. Sometimes at idle, it would get quieter than a gasser, as in you could not hear the motor. It would last a few seconds then back to normal.
The EB controls the EGR and they replaced both on mine, last December. The latest recall replaces the EB wiht a new design and reprograms the ECM to operate the EGR differently. I don't know what is different on an '05 but that's exactly what a bad EB made mine sound like.

Since he said orriginaly he had no performance issues i assumed it was the normal duty cycle of the egr but familyride is right the ebp sensor can contribute to this as well....

Forgive me if I'm way out of line here, but I noticed that your in FL.
Assuming it's pretty warm and humid, I wonder if your cooling fan is coming on occasionally? It makes a heck of a racket when it cycles on.

Had the same problem on my February 05 production F250 and a new flash last month cured the same complaint. It helps reduce the EGR cycle time at idle. It also cured my engine surge (at constant throttle. Im my opinion, now the truck sound like a "real" diesel at idle (I'm coming out of a '97 7.3 and had no issue with that "noise" ... guess thats why there's a V10 gasser for the hearing sensitive). Now I'm keeping an eye on the mpg, as I have been averaging ~ 12 mpg before the flash. It's a hard swallow coming out of an "old" truck getting 19 mpg on a bad day. Try the flash, so far it's been pretty good!
I have a 2004, 6.0 that did the same thing until I got a recall notice and I told the mechanic about this and he reprogrammed it with a new update. It fixed it!!
Mine did this when brand new--never took it in and after the first outing it stopped doing it----maybe just the break-in blues---now seems to work fine---but I swear it acted as if the engine was no longer in the truck---totally stealth silent----almost wish I still had it!!!! lol---

It's kind of freaky huh? First time mine did it it was like it was an electric truck. I couldn't hear the motor so I stepped on the throttle to take off and after a second of 2 ot came back normal. But to not hear the engine at all, but still start to move, was a trip!
