Random Coolant Leak

One morning I went to go drive my truck and I see a coolant leak on the ground. I slid under the truck and saw the leak was coming from the back of the motor on the pass side. I started it up and drove to the dealer, when I parked it the leak was gone. The diesel tech's couldn't find the leak so they pressure tested the cooling system. They said the system had no pressure loss. I've heard about the EGR's cracking so I told them to check that aswell, they said it was fine. The night before the leak I was beating on the truck pretty hard. I this the puking I am hearing of? I thought coolant would only puke from the coolant resivior. It hasnt been doing it latley and the truck hasnt been running any different. Could it be the orange EGR cooler hose? Could I see the hose if it was cracked? Is it alright if I fill the resivior back up with 50/50 premixed green/blue coolant rather than the yellow stuff thats recommended?

Re: Random Coolant Leak

It is possible it leaked from the headgasket during the beating, and ran down the side then. I have heard of 6.0's having headgasket problems like that.

Re: Random Coolant Leak

If it only leaks when the motor is cold the EGR cooler hose is most likely it. The engine has to be bone cold for it to leak. It has metal tubes on each end and orings seal it to the EGR cooler tube and oil cooler. They leak between the ends and the hose or the orings. The hose looks fine but still leaks.
I'd not mix the coolant, might cause you problems down the road.

Re: Random Coolant Leak

Thanks, ill have them check that if it happens again. Im glad its not puking, I never let the truck get above 1400 when I was beating it. I only had it at about 1350 for a few seconds.

Re: Random Coolant Leak

What's the safe practical egt limit for a 6.0?

Re: Random Coolant Leak

Around 1250 I would say. It might spike to 1300 or so but as long as it doesnt sit there, you should be fine.

no.. do not use the 50/50 stuff.. it is not supposed to be mixed.. it will react with the yellow stuff thats in there.. use the Motorcraft yellow stuff from the dealer.. so that way if you have a problem that is covered under warranty.. they cant deny your warranty claim b/c you mixed coolants..

Re: Random Coolant Leak

Most coolants can take up to 10% of another coolant without problems with it's protection. I don't know about Ford's coolant for sure. I'd say your fine but I'd buy the correct coolant for it or change it out completely. I have switched some with other long life diesel coolant. We only keep a barrel of one type.

Re: Random Coolant Leak

My buddy has a coolant leak on the passenger's side, looks like it's coming from the head gasket but I'm not sure. So if it leaks when it's cold it's most likely the EGR cooler hose?

Re: Random Coolant Leak

I just got mine out of the shop last week. It was a flattened O ring on the EGR cooler adaptor.

It leaked only when it was cold.

I hope this helps.

PS The bill was around $452 but somehow it got covered underwarranty. Its a 03 with 51M miles

Re: Random Coolant Leak

Most likely yes it's the hose leaking. It runs down by the starter when it leaks. Most dealers cover them under the 100K warranty, so it'll cost you a 100 bucks.

You can change the hose without taking off the intake manifold but it's still a large job.

Oh, ok. I was just wondering. I peg my egt gauge at 1500 for short bursts fairly frequently, but I don't have a 6.0. It may be that a 6.0 runs lower egt's than other engines under similar circumstances.
