Raw Diesel Smell

Where should I look besides HFCM, Engine mount filter for an intermittent smell of diesel in the cab? No evidence in the above mentioned areas.

Thanks,
MW

Re: Raw Diesel Smell

I get a smell on occasion and chalk it up to " it is a diesel ".

Cracked Y pipes. There is a TSB on it.

Too extensive to list.

Days in shop so far 71 and counting as they still have it.

34K miles.

After spending a month in the shop and having it back only 2 weeks, it's back in the shop. Ford Customer service refused to send me a DSB Package. Told me the info is in the back of manual. Well truck is in shop and I don't have the info can you give it to me? No, it's in the manual.

Re: Raw Diesel Smell

What creeper said. Cracked Y pipe bulleting 1419. They replaced the Y pipe on my truck last week and the exhaust smell is gone. Open the hood, start the engine, and listen. You should hear a "hiss" leak sound on the driver's side.

Raw diesel smell,,, not exhaust. Will Y pipes produce this type of oder?

Thanks for the replies guys. I can always count on this place for answers.. And the smell is not from shoes etc. I kind of chalked it up to being a diesel too but if theres a leak somewhere, I want to fix it.

He is referring to the fuel guys, not the exhaust. He did say "fuel filter" and "HFCM".

Re: Raw Diesel Smell

I sometimes get an exhaust smell in the cab. It appears as if it varies with the wind. Where are the Y-pipes cracking and can it be visually inspected prior to removal? I don;t want to bring the truck to the dealer if it's not necessary.
I do hear a small hiss but it's really slight and thought it might be a vacumm leak.

Re: Raw Diesel Smell

I am not sure how hard it would be to visually inspect for the leak, I had my dealer do it. Look here http://dan.prxy.org/Truck/6L_bible_h...Page_031.html. The red pipe to the turbo is the Y pipe. It usually cracks in the areas that are flexible.

Re: Raw Diesel Smell

Pull your dipstick and give it a sniff. You might be getting the smell of raw fuel from the crankcase. I am, but they can't find anything wrong

Re: Raw Diesel Smell

The original post mentions " diesel smell" only and does not quantify it as burnt fuel. mine smells of raw fuel once in a whlie and with the window open. Have to map out the high pressure fuel line and start looking. According to the manual, you can crack open the HFCM drain after 20 minutes of shut dow giving it time to lose pressure.

Re: Raw Diesel Smell

Well I took a look at the exhaust while underneath changing the oil. The whole firewall is covered in black soot. I ran my hand around the Y-pipe and sure enough, you could feel the exhaust coming out of a slit in the pipe. The slit is pretty big and is located at the transition into the flex pipe left side. It makes a hissing sound if you're underneath while it's running but barely audible from the cab.
I brought it to the dealer and they told me they will need to pull the transmission to access it. The dealer also said he has replaced numerous y-pipes already and it's a new revision. I don't know how true that is.
