Re-design in 06 turbo

Ref: those in the know...help thread.

When I picked up my truck yesterday the tech told me that when he got the part it had a coating on it similar to teflon. Maybe to help deflect moisture? He is a master diesel tech and he said he swaps turbos all of the time, but this is the first one he has seen like this. Now this could be a good thing or a bad thing...does anyone have more indepth info on this change?

Also this one seems to make more noise than my previous one. When I drive I can hear this one really whistle down and up....kinda neat.

Much louder that when it was new and louder than my previous 03'

Talking

I have a benign question, but when you say you "picked up your truck" does that mean you had it in for service and Turbo was replaced?

I ask only because I have on 06 F350 6.0L and the Turbo was fixed at 24K miles. At the time, Ford would not permit full replacement, but have the tech at the dealer order parts to remanufacture/repair it. At least that is what the SA told me.

When I got the truck back, I took a closer look at the Turbo, it appears the entire unit was replaced. Sticker on the casing showing "made in Mexico, Remanufactured"

Problem with turbo was moisture and rust. Few hundred miles later, I noticed quite a lot of oil blow back from lower boot at the intercooler. Enough to drip to ground. Lasted for a while. Called dealer and they said it was normal and their diesel shop was booked up so I should call back.

Took to another dealer, they found problems with Turbo that caused loss of power. Replaced the blue boots and clamps. Noticeably different.

Sorry for the long story, but after writing this I am now wondering if there is a new Turbo part being installed by Ford.

thanks for reading...

It was in for an EGR valve replacement and the tech determined that the turbo was sticking just slightly at 20psi. He determined that he should just replace the turbo for good measure because I only have 33k on the motor.

I have to believe that this is a remanufactured turbo as well, I do not think that they install new ones at this time. The main concern of mine was the new coating on the turbo itself. The SA and tech were suprised when they had seen it, because they had not before. Like I said earlier it could be a bad thing or a good...just unsure.

Also, I have never had a dealership tell me to call back, they just set an appointment....I would never even call them again or even stop in to buy an air freshener.

Just make sure you change your fuel filters(both) and do not let it excessively idle for long periods and the moisture problem should not be an issue. Also, pick up some motorcraft cetane boost and performance booster which could cause it to burn a little hotter and evaporate the moisture....that is what the master diesel tech told me....good luck!
