rear end clutches

I had a squeeling noise come from rearend is there any one out there that can tell me how to check to see if the clutches are burnt in the carrier befor i take to dealer. thanks

You would have to take the carrier out of the rear end. The clutch packs are on the spider gears and only work when turning or when on tire is spinning faster than the other. You would have to be going in a circle for hrs to burn up a clutch pack up. Are you sure its not a u-joint ? Usally don't see clutch packs go bad unless from abuse but thats not to say it can't happen.

my clutches are bad from doing a burnout! it makes a kindof grinding noise now when ONE tire is spinning fast...if everythings working ok, both tires should break loose!

Also when they are going bad you will notice on hard tight turns at slow speeds there will be a quick shudder from the rear end that you will feel throught the truck. That is what it feels like in the 8.8 and 9.75 rear ends on the Explorers and Expeditions.
