Ok, no where on the tach or in my owners manual is a max rpm or even a caution range indicated or specified. Ford website specifies torque at 3300rpm, is that red line. Would like to know, actually I think I NEED to know. Oh by the way, just took delivery of 06 F350, DRW, 4x4, CC, LB, King Ranch, PSD, 3.73, dark copper. SWEEEEET!
Thanks for your help.

You have an automatic. Stock it won't come close to redline, and it's not even making power near red line. Tuned is a different story.

I am unsure if there is a published "redline" rpm... the PCM will keep you from over-revving when accelerating - "over-speeding" the motor going downhill is another story... I would be going much past 4000 rpm - if I let it get that high.
FWIW... in stock trim, torque peak is about 2000 rpm and remains relatively flat up to horsepower peak around 3300 rpm. After that, torque starts to fall off. Translation... for best results, upshifts should be made to enter the next higher gear at the rpm where you motor is making the best torque.
While keeping the rpm up is important, it serves no purpose to rev until it wont rev no more...
I wouldn't worry about overspeeding the motor going downhill. Have you guys ever heard of a "runaway"? The fastest I've seen one turn and survive is about 8,000 rpm..
in the manual ( diesel motor ) that is given to new owners, there is a section on gear selection vs road speed and at the end it does caution against overrevving the motor by shifting too low on downhills or while going quite fast. I can get the numpbers and post them here on edit later in the day. I don't believe the automatic guys can do that as it is impossible to push start the PSD.(power won't flow back to the engine thru the auto )
There is a redline on my tachometer that starts at about 4100,

There is a rev limiter on the 6.0(Governor if you will) According to International you cant go over the "red line" because of the Governor. The computer ain' gonna let it happen. Therefor no need for a "red line". This is for the 05 and up.

Unless you have a manual transmission going down a mountain in a low gear the RPMs will go over the governed RPM.

The owner's manual for the 6.0 is (or was when I got my '05) identical to that of my '02 7.3 as far as upshifts and downshifts on a manual tranny. Those of us who have owned both know that to be BS. That's why it took me awhile to get used to driving the new truck- I was afraid to rev it high. The 7.3 didn't seem to like that. I have wondered if the stock tach is accurate- my truck has "tached out" anywhere from 3500 to 4100. I also found it peculiar that the tach had no redline indicated on it. Okay, here's the deal. While I am NOT concerned about reaching or hitting "red line", I would like to know so that I can compute percent of max. I spent 3 hrs driving this sweeeet beauty today, there is NO fricken red line on the tach! Nothing in the manual. I don't NEED to know, I WANT to know. I have made my living since 1976 flying airplanes, and currently am a Captain for a major airline, so I just get into this kinda stuff. Hey, who cares how much oil the crankcase is supposed to hold unless you just "need to know" or want to know.for whatever the underlying reason. Anyhow, just like to know. Just like I'd also like to know what the yellow line temp on the trans represents in degrees, hell, it doesn't matter celius or farenheit, give me a number.
Thanks.
Regards to all.

I've asked this question also. I was told 4100. The reason I wanted to know is that with my tuner the truck never falls off on power. Pulls hard all the way to 4000. My 03 does have a redline on the tach at about 4200, but my manual says don't rev over 3600 and the governer will kick in at 4000.
I think I'll keep shifting mine around 2500-2800. This seems the best. But I'm pretty confident that in saying 4100 is safe redline.
