Re: red line 6.0 psd

Whoa there hoss, no offense was intended or should have been taken. Just trying to explain why I am interested in the information. As always, every reply is appreciated. By the way, do you have any idea what the red line might be, or just sensitive.
Regards

Re: red line 6.0 psd

Thanks for the link. Looks like the answer is to install an after market trans temp guage for any heavy towing or hauling.

Re: red line 6.0 psd

This excerpt taken directly from my 2003 6.0 Liter Owners Guide SUPPLEMENT:

Engine governed speed

The engine governor is controlled by the PCM. The PCM controls fuel input to limit maximum engine speed. It will not, however, prevent engine overspeeding resulting from downshifting at high vehicle speed or by descending steep grades at too high a vehicle speed for the selected transmission gear.

For maximum vehicle speed in various gears, refer to Manual transmission shift speeds in the Driving section of your owner's guide. Do not exceed 3,600 rpm. Maximum engine governed speed is 4,000 rpm depending on engine load. Excessive rpm can only be achieved by manually downshifting at too high of a vehicle speed.

Operating the engine beyond the governed speed can cause severe engine damage.

This Paragraph was quoted directly from page 5 of my Power Stroke Supplement booklet.

Re: red line 6.0 psd

It makes sense especialy for a 6 speed. The ECM can kill fuel completly thus governing RPM's, vehicle movement in gear will spin the motor to whatever it'll take before self-destruction. Ways to stop the motor from spinning when the truck is moving is a crank brake or compression braking (like a true Jake Brake) which is all just therory wiht the 6.0. Re: red line 6.0 psd

Whe Ford went with the different style guages in '05, they did not put a "redline mark" on the guage. Thats why you boy's with older 6.0L's see the mark and the '05 and newer guys don't

Re: red line 6.0 psd

Tach 'er up to about 3200 before you shift if you're in a hurry. You'll be happier with the results when you yank the next gear. It took me awhile to get used to this, but I'll take mine up to 3400 or 3600 before I shift, and it performs well. It won't hurt the engine, it'll blow the soot out of the egr, and hell, it's FUN!

Re: red line 6.0 psd

That's not very good advice, Greg.... Overspeeding is always a concern. Connecting rods and connecting rod fasteners have a finite strength. As the piston, rod assembly passes over TDC, they change direction of travel rather abruptly. The centrifugal force is immense... you might get away with it once... you might get away with it twice.... but overstress is still overstress and it will catch up with you eventually....

Ever thought of fleshing out your qualifications????

So that's why my 03 w/ a manual trans HAS a redline (which starts @ 4200).

My eyes bugged out as I read that too. That's a lot of rotating mass to spin at 8000 RPM. I've probably got over $3000 just in high end crank, rod's pistons etc. (not to mention the balancing and assembly and all the machine work that it takes to put one together right) in my boat motor (540 cid) but I'd never think of spinning it up to 8000 RPM and it's less than 10:1 compression and I'm sure much less weight. 6000 RPM maybe but not for long and its build to turn about 5200-5400 peak. I'd like it to last just as I would my "diesel" truck motor.

Re: red line 6.0 psd

I'm sorry, sir, but you are incorrect. You might have a redline indicator on your truck, but there is none on mine. Seems odd they wouldn't do that on a stick shift.
