Reflash for tranny shudder

Took my 05 F250 in for a transmission shudder, only shudders if under heavy load (pulling trailer) or if stomping it from a stop. Only does it in first gear, as soon as it shifts, its gone. It's not wheel/axle hop. They said that the 05B27 recall fix will fix that, but then they reflashed the ECM and said this new program will fix tranny shudder that I described.

It didn't do diddily. Shudder still there. Anybody ever hear of a flash that fixes tranny shudder on the 05's? How is a new snap ring in the 05B27 recall going to fix tranny shudder. I think maybe he has that one mixed up with the 04B24 recall. Anybody have an idea what causes this tranny shudder?

Re: Reflash for tranny shudder

I have a shudder if I hit resume on cruise control to get back up to speed. Not sure if this is the same thing, but I think it is the torque converter doing something strange. I'll be taking it in soon to see what the dealer thinks.

Re: Reflash for tranny shudder

That is the first I have heard that it is the trans. There is TSBs talking about shudder under acceleration and they say it is the angle of the drive shaft. There is a TSB for 2 piece drive shafts and another for 1 piece drive shafts.

Re: Reflash for tranny shudder

I think it is the trans too.

They tried twice to shim mine to fix it with no luck. Ford Engineering says there is no fix if the shims don't work and that the shudder is "normal". Feels to me like the clutch packs in the trans are chattering on lockup and load.

So if the TSB shim fix does not help you, you're SOL according to Ford.

Re: Reflash for tranny shudder

Hello, When I kick off the cruise and then hit resume I get a shudder. I have been unable to duplicate this manually. Also if I shift to reverse and give it throttle quickly it will shudder. My truck was built around 11/1/2004. Is the TSB supposed to address this problem?

Re: Reflash for tranny shudder

I had a shudder on my 04 when I would pull my 5th wheel. I took it in and they shimmed the driveshaft. That did nothing for the shudder.
I found that when I hitched up my trailer, the back of my truck dropped 2-3". I install a set of air bags in the rear and now keep the truck at the same height hitched as when it is unhitched. It has eliminated the shudder. Works for me.

Re: Reflash for tranny shudder

Wayne_J:

Interesting. So it could well be the ride height change that causes the shudder to be more pronounced when towing.

Sorry you had to spend your own $$$ to put in airbags when the issue should really be fixed under warranty. But we all know Ford does not honour their warranty, just claims it a "normal characteristic of the trucks".

Re: Reflash for tranny shudder

Mine shuddered real bad at one point. Center carrier shims helped somewhat... Finally noticed the driveline was apx. 5/8" out of line horizontally from front to back. Moved the center carrier to the left as far as it would go to line it. It is still out maybe 3/16" or so, but currently there is no shudder under any circumstance and I am not going to press my luck and mess with it more.

Re: Reflash for tranny shudder

Interesting, so that would be why it feels like internal transmission engagements, if one has a cracked piston in there.

Sounds like checking the side to side alignment is a good idea too. I'll have to look at that.
