Last week after temps dropped, I noticed trouble starting cold in the morning. Not by any means cold here in eastern PA. Lots of black smoke and really bad romp, or maybe missing, at cold startups. Several mornings of two to three minute crank times till it finally started and would run on it's own. Once it idled for two to three minutes, it would run fine with no issues. So last night I plugged it in before going to bed, and this morning it started with no problems and ran fine. After work, at 74 deg., I had slight romp and more black smoke, for about two minutes. The truck runs great otherwise, and I have had no problems. All stock with 42K miles. Air and fuel filters changed at 30K. Oil changed every 5K. New batteries last winter. This seems to be temp related? No codes registered, or lights have ever come on. I drained the water seperator and found only clean fuel. Any help would be welcome.
I use to own a 6.0. Did you get the latest flash that is suppose to help with cold starts. Also, I recommend rotella 5w40 syn for diesels. If all that does not work might want to look at the icp or ipr.
There is a TSB out there for the "inductive heat flash" program for the FICM (Fuel Injector Control Module). Fixed mine, same issue as you are describing.

I had the flash that makes the injectors buzz, and the next one after that, if that was the one for inductive heat. I just finished reading the TSB (08-26-3) for FICM diagnosis, and it seems to describe my problems perfectly. The FICM is triggered by the engine oil temp sensor at 68 degrees. I am past my 5 year warranty for the engine, but the TSB states that the FICM is covered by the emission warranty. Has anyone had their FICM replaced and covered that way?
I still had some issues with my FICM after the reflash, but different symptoms. Turned out the FICM was going bad as the voltage dropped from initial 48v after starting. Purchased a re-manufactured FICM from the dealership and had the new one flashed again (about $560 for the part and had to repay to have this one flashed). Frustrating since I'm also out of warranty and paying out of pocket. Have them test the voltage for the FICM and the oil temp sensor if you can.
