6.0L Power Stroke Engine and DrivetrainDiscussion of the 6.0L Power Stroke diesel engine and drivetrain in the 2003-Up Super Duties and Excursions. No gas engine discussion allowed except on transmissions and drivetrain that pertain to all models. Please confine discussion of topics in this forum to those items that are specific to the 6.0L Power Stroke engine.
One of my drivers made the dreaded "green handle is always diesel" mistake and pumped 3/4 tank of unleaded into the tank. It smoked a little and ran rough off idle, but otherwise ran normal. He drove it appx 30 miles on a delivery, and called to say it was running rough. Geez, on a 6.0 that could be a million things. When he got back I immediately noticed the exhaust smell wasn't right. We figured out what happened, drained it down as far as we could then re-filled w/ diesel. After a filter change, we'll see what happens.

If nothing's wrong with it--that to me would prove the 6.0 is one tough engine. Doubt any other brand could handle it that well without taking out some rods....

Traded in: 1995 Ford F-250 XLT Super Cab Longbed 4x4, 460, auto, 3.55's., K&N filter, glasspack duals. Miss everything about this truck but the gas mileage....
Some days you're the dog.....Some days you're the hydrant.
A friend who is parts manager at dodge dealer says they've gotten several trucks in where this happened. He says they just won't run on it, and apparently none have ruined the motor!! I thought that was amazing. He was taking the gas, now contaminated w/diesel, and running it in his Tacoma and lawn mowers!! He said it ran fine on it.
How does that old saying go... "a spoonful of wine in a barrel of sewage is sewage and a spoonful of sewage in a barrel of wine is also sewage"
I guess late-model diesels never heard old sayings...

We put the drained fuel in an old class 7 yard truck, '62 Int'l., lol.
Odd, but it ran perfect after the initial idle stumble/smoke thing cleared up. I had a talk w/ the driver, don't trust green handles and smell it before you put it in.

Our policy for drivers that feed unleaded to diesels is; whatever cost are to clean the fuel system is their's. Sorry, but there's no excuse for a professional driver to do that.....
We had a driver do this to an 03 F350. We cleaned it out and set him to Michigan. That was around 72,000 miles ago. The 6.0 is a tough kid.

My roomate filled his tank with gas on his 7.3 (2001) and drove for 80 miles. Said it started to backfire and spit flames so he shut it down. We towed him to the shop, and they drained the tank and filter. I started up ok but didn't run worth a crap. Had to have the injectors and pump replaced. Total cost was almost $4000. Now, my frends little brother filled up a 6.0 with gas and drove 30 miles. The ford service guy said the 6.0 shuts itself down when the gas got to the filter. I don't know how that would work, but no damage to that truck.

Do you want to stick with that analogy?

By definition a "professional driver" would be one who gets paid to drive. Therefore, that would make it easy to find such a person. However, it also means that being a professional driver has nothing to do with being an "expert driver". I think you're seeing my point............
Just cuz you're getting paid don't mean you know what you're doing....

Which is why Pops or his brother do the interviews. Then can tell in minutes by a few questions if the person is worthy.
Its real scarey the folks we see with DOT certs that have no clue....
We had a guy tells Pops that its no different driving a church van or an 80,000lb truck.
Pops turned around and left him standing in the lobby!
