running vegetable oil

i was wandering if anyone has ran vegetable oil mixed with diesel in their 6.0L or not. I am thinking about doing this. My uncle has a 04 duramax and has been running it in his truck for 2 years down here except for when it gets below 60 degrees. He just carries an extra fuel filter with him in case it cloggs up which it has before going down the road. but thats the only problem he's had in 2 years. Would it work in a 6.0L?

I don't advocate the use of straight or waste VO for environmental reasons in general and not at all in a modern high pressure injection system like the 6.0's. In an older IDI type system, hou could get away with it, but its a lot more involved than just going out & pouring the vo in the tank. Straight, clean, new vo will be better than waste, but both contain Trans Fatty Acids that will gum up injectors over time. Waste oil can also contain caustic cleaning agents as well.

IF YOU DO USE VO, make sure you filter it to under 1 micron, dry it well, and have a completely separate heated fuel system that contains the oil, and that you can flush with #2 during start & stop.

Biodiesel is much better for your truck & the atmosphere, but it too requires some attention to make it, and real attention to Quality Control. Commercial grade BD will not hurt the 6.0 if it is fresh.

Take a spin down in the alternate fuel forum here.

A friend of mine runs straight VO in his Mercedes diesel. I can testify to what was already said. You want to start up and shutdown on diesel and switch to VO after you are at temp.

My friend with the Mercedes thought that it was warm enough here in San Diego to not worry about it. His car ran fine for months. Eventually letting the car shutdown on VO did some damage to the engine. He replaced the rings, started using diesel for start up and shutdown, and has been problem free ever since.
