Is it safe to do this?

I like to downshift to slow down in town. Is this safe to do with an automatic? It sounds cool too.

It doesn't sound like a smart thing to be doing with a new truck !

Re: Is it safe to do this?

I just take it from drive to 3 to 2 to 1. I only do it when Im going maybe 30. It cuts down on the use of my service brakes.

Re: Is it safe to do this?

way i figure it is.. whats cheaper? a tranny or brakes? even if your NOT hurting the tranny, it cannot be good for it. i just use them brakes or T/H mode and that works awesome, especially with my 37's.

Re: Is it safe to do this?

Downshifting the trans manually is the same as Tow/Haul downshifting the trans.

Re: Is it safe to do this?

I have done this with automatics for over 40 years. Never had a failure that could be attributed to this practice. Read somewhere many years ago that, if done at reasonable speeds, it resulted in no more wear than a normal upshift.

I wanted a real handshaker, but I would've had to wait about 6 months to get one the way I would want it. I LOVE having a King Ranch package, so that makes up for it. Why cant you get a damn manual tranny in a KR? I just dont get it.

Re: Is it safe to do this?

Another question is, Why can't you get a KR, or HD with a manual transfer case? Keith

Re: Is it safe to do this?

You can get a KR with a manualy transfer case, or at least you could in 04. I know a guy with one.
