Stalls and hard to crank

It started stalling at stops about two weeks ago but would crank up again after a couple of tries. Then it died and was towed to a shop where the tech checked it. He suspected no fuel pressure and the data readout said 25% fuel pressure. The pump was running. He spun it over a few times and then it cranked but wouldnt respond the the gas pedal. (No revup) as he watched the fuel pressure % rise the engine smoothed out and then responded to gas pedal. We changed the filters and then drove and it still died.

The dealer has it now and they said the batteries were bad and replaced them but when the turned on the key with the new batteries the check engine light came on and it stored a lot of codes(What I was told) and he said that the instument cluster was bad and needs replacing.

Am I getting stiffed by the ford dealer or can an instument cluster cause a diesel to die?

Thanks for any input

Terry

What year model is your truck and how long did you go before changing fuel filters. Injectors can easily get damaged with low fuel pressure. Also, if you could list the codes, you could get more help.

Mark,
I cant list the codes because the ford place wouldnt give them to me.
It's an '05 F-250 with 6.0L . 94,000 miles

Is it possible to get a code for an instrument cluster?

The filters had been changed 4000 miles ago and werent clogged when we replaced them last friday.

I am almost sure that the problem is caused by low HPOP problem. The dealer says that the code pertained to the computer not knowing it was in fifth gear and lugging and stalling because of the tranny not downshifting when coming to a stop.

Still the question remains. Can an instrument cluster do this?

I have never heard of the instrument cluster causing these issues.

I have some concerns about the "data readout" for fuel pressure. Especially using a percent for fuel pressure....

There is no fuel pressure sensor on the 6.0. Some might confuse ICP (injection control pressure) with fuel pressure - highly inaccurate but nearly forgiveable. But this is going to be in PSI or volts depending on the "data" selection.

IPR is expressed in percent... but having IPR climb isn't always a good thing.

The reference to the instrument cluster warns me that someone might be using the "parlour trick" to actually diagnose something.

Smile

Thanks GrampyJim for the redirection,

I am using a snapon scanner for diagnostics. I will have to wait till I get the truck out of the shop before I can verify what acronym I read.

The fact that the reading I was watching rose to 100% as the engine beagn responding to gas pedal control gave me the impression that it was fuel pressure related.

I suspect the HPOP issue being the problem but I have never been affiliated with all the symptoms that might be evident on the data monitor during this condition. At the same time,I feel like I'm being screwed by the ford dealer.

I hope,at least this,is forgivable

Terry
