starting to get bad feelings

Well my truck now with 1100 miles on it has had its third harsh 2-1 downshift while in the tow/haul mode, turbo drone when around 2000 rpm and 76-80mph, and today wife went to start it and told me it took around 10 seconds to start when cold. This is the first time we have had any issues with it not wanting to start right away.

Let it break in some before you start to worry. The tranny could still be in "learn" mode. The long start is probably due to the cold weather. The drone could go away after she breaks in some.

Re: starting to get bad feelings

Thats what I'm telling myself right now. The drone doesn't bother me to much because I don't drive the interstate to often, its the starting issue that has me the most concerned. For all I know the wife may have just got in and tried to start it without letting the glowplugs do there thing.

Re: starting to get bad feelings

Nefordfan, do yourself a favour, get the remote starter for you and your wife. Get the Ford one! I used to be the one that started the car, truck whatever for the mrs, when it was *****ie cold out. Hearing that PSD cranking and starting while I'm finishing a coffee is music on a -18 morning.

Not sure what the glow plug thing is, unless you mean dohickie, however the Ford unit has the glow plug cycle incorporated into the program.

Re: starting to get bad feelings

There is a flash out for the harsh downshift, if that gives you any peace of mind.

My '06 has 5200 trouble free miles so far just the way it came from the factory.

I think they meant they forget to wait for the glow plugs because they are used to staring gassers.

As for the Ford Remote Start, unless they have a new one out now, they do not have a glow plug cycle, as in it waits for the glow plug's or WTS light. The GP'sand WTS operate independently while the GP's actually continue past when the WTS light goes off. However, with the Ford system, to have a delayed start, you have to set it to a 30 second delay. It's either that or an immediate start.

I just switched mine to a 30 second delay and I'll tell you, 30 seconds is like an hour. They need to change that to like 15 seconds.

Either way, it gets you a delay you'd need in cold weather and it's great to have it.

Re: starting to get bad feelings

I figure I'll just keep driving it like I do, if the tranny decides to fall on the groundor it just plain refuses to start I'll have it towed to the dealer. That's what the warrenty is for. Just don't like the idea of somebody messin' with my new toy so soon.

Re: starting to get bad feelings

Are you using tow/haul when not towing or hauling(or towing or hauling something small)? If so, it will be harsh. When I tow my travel trailer(about 9000#) and use tow/haul, it works nicely, but there is noticible slow down, but not head bangingly so. If I were to use tow/haul lightly loaded, I'd probably hit my head on the steering wheel.

As for starting, it seem to be all over the map. This is my first diesel too and I had it now for about a year. They are just different than a gas engine, and you have to take it as it comes. The things you mentioned, I was concerned about a year ago, but no longer am. Just enjoy it, and keep an eye on it.

You will probably get the wet bellhousing too. If you do, I wouldn't worry at this point yet, because I believe some of it is caused by new engine build grease that liquifies and runs out for a few thousand miles then dried out. I say if it doesnt drip on the ground, just keep an eye on it.

As for getting worried, that is the effect of reading this website. Most guys come here with problems, looking for help. If you take what you read here, and start looking for problems with your truck, your mental self starts to make mountains out of a mole hill. Just relax, and know that you have a good warrantee(as long as you do do any mod's that jeopardize it) and just roll with the punches.

Re: starting to get bad feelings

this list can do it to ya man...look at it this way...you can
take it in & get it looked at (ill avoid the word fixed, for those
w/ so many problems yet to be resolved).

OR

you can drive it til it breaks and take it in then...when i bought
mine and started reading this list i was scared to death that it
was gonna break...ive got 29k on it now and not a single problem...
even the ones that this list convinced me that i had...that didnt
really come to true fruition.

its a truck, DRIVE it...DRIVE it til it breaks, and then fix it
or trade/dump it etc !

Re: starting to get bad feelings

NFD I have been driving diesels trucks since 80 and Fords since 85. On starting you truck in cold weather try waiting about 30 seconds after the light goes out on the dashboard instrument cluster. The glow plugs stay on after the light goes out. You may have to do this twice. If that doesn't do it you need to have it checked out. They have the instruments to help them pin point what part of the starting system is causing the trouble.

I would also tell them about the turbo drone because they can look and loosen the parts and see if they can help that also.

On the tranny if there is a flash for it get that done as if it goes south you maybe without your truck for a good while. If it should lockup it could also do damage to other things and make them wear out sooner than they should.

Being as you haven't had your truck very long and it has low mileage on it they are likely to see if they can keep you happy and it will be a good time for you to check out their service department. heck I actually can purchase my trucks for a few hundred less than where I buy them, but it is wort that and more because of the service there. A couple of the other dealers in the area are well simply chitty.

I have the so called bell housing leak on my o5 X and unless it starts dripping ain't no way that they are going to go into it. Never has put a drop on the driveway and I have wiped it down three times in about 4,300 miles. I had to evacuate for Hurricane Rita and put over 3,000 miles on it there alone so far so good.

Good luck - - Ed

Re: starting to get bad feelings

The droan gets better after break in and the tow haul does after it has time to learn. I wouldn't be concerned. When I first bought mine the tow haul would downshift and bark the tires.

The tranny learn mode should not take that many miles. Hell...I got mine out of learn mode (if that is what it was in) by shifting thorugh each gear, waiting 3 seconds between shifts. If you have not used 1st, 2nd or 3rd gear, that may solve some of the tranny shifting problems. Just sit in your drive way, start the truck, with your foot on the brake pedel put it in reverse, wait 3 seconds, put it in drive, wait 3 seconds and go back to reverse...back and forth back and forth so that each position gets hit three times. Then get it on the road and drive in 1st gear for at least 3 seconds, then bump up to 2nd...then 3rd...then back to drive, then back to 3rd, then back to 2nd...lalalalala...until each gear has been hit three times for three seconds each. Your tranny is now learnt.

The drone seems to not be a problem, but an annoyuance. Take it in and get it fixed. Why get annoyed over such a piddly issue?

The hard start in cold weather may just be a characteristc of a diesel engine. My 7.3 was hard to start on any morning that was less than 20 degrees. My current 6.0 has shown signs of hard start at 20 degrees, but not as bad as the old 7.3. By hard start I am talking about cranking it for about 3 seconds before it ignites. And this is why Ford puts a heating element in every light duty diesel truck they sell...so you can keep the engine warm for quick starts. Unfortunately you may have to buy a plug cord to make that option work.
