starts runs 1 sec then dies, then tries to start 3-4 times then starts

Wasnt sure how to list my problem....anyhow in the morning or first start of the day it starts and runs perfect for maybe one second then dies. Then when you try to start it the next 3-4 times its tries to start but doesnt. Then after trying to start it a few times it starts perfectly.
Its almost like a gasser that has just a little bit of gas inthe carb to start it for a second then you have to crank it several times to get gas back up to the carb so it will start and stay running. After the first start of the day it seems to start fine until it sits overnight. Plugging in makes no difference. Any ideas?

I've had vehicles with similar problem in the past. I would check FICM voltage with a scan tool. Also recommend testing glow plug system.

When it starts then dies stop there and open the cap to the upper fuel filter. See if the filter is empty. It may be time for new fuel filters. When the FICM starts to go you get a rolling start, like trying to start a car with a flooded carburetor i.e. you have to keep the starter turning after it has starts to catch. A test would be to plug in the block heater and let it run over night. If it starts normally the next day then it could be the FICM (you already said this has no effect). Bad glow plugs will give also give you a rolling start but tons of white smoke plus the glow plug system on the 6.0 has been very dependable. I suspect a fuel issue. Either filters or a soon to be bad lift pump. As said we need to know the year of the truck. The FICM problems are seen in 2005 and newer trucks. I would change the fuel filters asap. Low fuel pressure will take out a set of injectors faster then asap....

Its a 2003 and it has about 200 miles on both filters. I replaced them when i replaced the engine. Is there any fuel related anti drainback check valves anywhere that might be sticking?

I believe there is in the top fuel filter. Ford recommends OEM filters only some aftermarket filters are shorter and won't close the valve all the way.

That was a good catch Paintingman. I was figuring it was a fuel issue but it could be a oil issue. These trucks run on oil pressure. No oil pressure and it will not start. If you do not have an oem filter with an oem cap that will absolutely cause the problem you are complaining about. It happens all of the time. I would make sure you have a motorcraft, fram or racor oil filter with the oem cap. If you do then put in a mechanical oil pressure gauge and watch the gauge when it starts. I bet you have no oil pressure until the 2nd or third start try. I would also, while you are at it, install a real oil pressure gauge in the cab. The one on the dash is nothing more then an idiot light that goes to the gauge center once you hit 7psi. So you could be chugging down the road with the gauge showing center scale but you only have 7psi...

NAPA fuel filters is a great suspect to start with.

I just fixed same issue with my truck. Check the fuel pump on the frame rail. That is what went out on mine. Changed the ICP, EGR Delete, check FCIM, ended up being the fuel pump.
