Steadily losing MPG

I need some help. since last fall I was at 14.3 MPG. the past month it dropped to 12.5 MPG and the past week it is now down to 12. I changed the fuel filters about 5,000 miles ago. I put some seafoam in this last tank and I'm just lost. I'm going to change out my filters again but I was wondering if anyone could point me in the right direction. the exhaust has been smelling different and I have bluish smoke every now and then. there were about two or three instances that I was stopped at the light turned green and pressed the pedal and it was lacking power for about 2 seconds after that its fine. I've never ran the truck had always baby it so this is concerning me. Any help would be greatly appreciated. oh and no codes popped up on the diagnostic test it's a 2005 crew cab F-250 6.0

If you are still under the engine warranty i would take it it. Could be a stuck egr, bad injector, or FICM issue. Not all codes turn on the light, there may be one there.

no its not under warranty anymore. I was going to pull off the egr and clean it, pull the turbo and clean it, do the fuel filter changes. I was wondering if it could be an injector but I'm not sure how to see if they all are working properly. I just don't want Ford screwing me over

Mine is the same, except for the baby part. Cant explain the loss of 2-2.5 mpg either. I do know that too much babying will soot up the turbo and intake. I used to tow a lot and it ran way better after towing, and gained milage, but now I store my toybox in Glamis.

Anyway, can you tow something with it? Run it hard towing, blow all that crap out of the turbo, then change the oil. I bet you'll be back up around 14 mpg.

Its not injectors. Loss of milelage would be the last thing to worry about if it an injector was bad. It would run/idle like sh!t, and you'd know it. Its clogged with diesel carbon build up. But before you do all the work to remove the turbo, try towing or running it hard a few times first.

Similar Problem

Last week I bought an '04 4x4 f250 with 67K on it and 4inch lift. Truck was a one owner and maintained very well, no chips/programmers ever but is getting 10.5 mpg. Doesn't look like its ever pulled/worked for anything more that an occasional driver. Should I just run the hell out of it for a day and see if that helps or take it to the shop? At 10.5 mpg its going to be up for sale again soon if something doesn't change.

I had a 16 ft enclosed trailer but I sold it. just never used it enough. I'm going to be plowing snow with it this winter so that should make it work hard. I'll be hard on it for the next couple of days and hopefully that works.

Iv got 82000 on mine. Its been lifted with 38s since 300 miles. The best iv ever got was 14.1 and 12.5 towing. 10.5 sux, thats wierd. Does it smoke at all? Unless you drive like you stole it all the time, it should be gettin at least 13. Maybe change the fuel filters.

Um, i am not so sure this is a run it hard moment. My post was reacting to the "the exhaust has been smelling different and I have bluish smoke every now and then..." part of your post. I would pull and clean the egr and see if there is an effect. Diesel Technician Society

Maybe one of the techs will post a reply...

Could the "baby it" part clog up the egr valve and turbo quicker than driving/reving harder? A few WOTs now and then just to keep it "flowing" good cant be a bad thing. The easiest way to check would be to just pop the egr valve out real quick and see how much coking there is. Mine has the blue smoke and stink sometimes in the morning, but runs great.

Ofcoarse, unfortunately, my e-who?-r plug fell off when I hit a bump leaving the dealers driveway back in '04 right after I bought it and cant seem to figure out how to fix it. Since then, Iv had to put up with quicker turbo spool up, lower egts, better mileage, and no egr problems-ever.

Every Ford diesel I've had would lose 2 to 3 mpg when the winter blend fuel started hitting the pumps, my mileage would go back up in the spring when they go back to "normal" summer diesel. My mileage has just started it's winter downward slide, so it would seem in my area, some stations have already started to sell winter fuel.

yeah I changed out my fuel filters and put some seafoam in again and some antigelling stuff and still nothing. fuel filters really didn't look that bad. I'm wondering if it is a mix of the winter fuel blend but I'm going to pull the egr and see if its coked and try and clean it. never pulled it before so that should be interesting
