Re: Steering dampner Question...

Thanks DaveBen!
That could be the reason for my wheel shimmy problem...I was messing with the steering dampner today and noticed that I could push it in VERY easy...then when I went to put it back together I could barely pull it out...

I mentioned steering dampner to the dealer when I first brought it in for my wheel shimmy problem(see other posts on wheel shimmy)but they said they checked it out...I think they just did a visual inspection...

Monday I'll be calling the dealer again....

Re: Steering dampner Question...

Dump the stock one and get an aftermarket unit. My stock steering damper started leaking at the shaft seal after about 20,000 miles. Don't know if Ford would have replaced it under warranty, don't care either. The stock one is just like the stock shocks, a POS.

It also wouldn't hurt if Ford mounted the darn thing a little higher off ground level. It hangs so low in the stock position that is makes a perfect rock magnet.

10-4 on it being a rock magnet, I am on my second one. I went w/ the real Rancho dampner. Works lots better than stock.

Re: Steering dampner Question...

Don't know, it happened tho..I was going down a steep rocky hill. Bent the hell out of it and scratched the paint on the tie rod, but did not do any damage to it. I don't see how it missed tearing off the lower radiator hose, but it did. I think I hit a rock with the tire and it "flipped up" sort of like stepping on a rake. Weirder things have happened to me, one time I rolled over a log and it flipped up and smashed the passenger mirror and put a huge dent in the side of the door...scared the crap out of my passenger, lol. If he hadn't had his arm inside, it would have broken it.

Oh, maybe you're talking about the older trucks where it was about the same level as the tie-rod.
The new trucks have it way up in there.
