Jack up the front and grab the top and bottom of the tire and try to rock it back and forth. Also check panhard rod, drag link for wear. If your truck is lifted or leveled you might have to adjust the drag link to center the wheel.

I'm having a similar problem, so I jacked up my truck, tried to rock the wheel and the entire wheel with rotor has play in it, so much the rotor is rubbing on the brake clips that hold the brake pads in place and its eating away at my rotor. I did not see any play on the ball joints, and there is no vibrating or noises, just the visual rotor damage. I have a 4x4, Do I have to replace the entire hub assembly?

Ok Help me out here, my truck is 4x4 i had someone rock the steering wheel left to right gently with the truck off as i looked at all the ball joints the Drivers wheel moves left to right with no problem when i went over to the passenger side i looked at the rod that comes down to the top of the wheel and the rod that links the drivers and passengers wheel together i noticed that they were both moving back and forth but the passengers wheel wasn't moving, is it the ball joints on that side or the wheel hub? are the uper and lower rods connected together or do they both connect to the passengers wheel hub? ?

The ball joints are the two connecting points between the axle and hub area. That is what allows the wheels to pivot. The tie rod ends are what is connected to each wheel and the pitman arm. If you can wiggle the steering wheel and you see the rods moving but the wheels don't attempt to move then you need tie rod ends. The ball joints are bad if you jack the front end up, place a bar under the tire and lift up and watch the two pivot points and if you see any play, replace them. If you jack it up and lift the wheel with the bar, there is no movement in the ball joints but the wheel still moves up and down like it is loose, then you have to replace the hub assemblies. The bearings are bad and are not servicable themselves, you have to replace the whole hub assembly.
