Still confused on air filter

I've searched here and I'm still confused. Maybe I've just missed it, but is the Motorcraft FA1778 air filter a replacement for the FA1746 specified in my '04 owners manual? Not interested in a third party, so I'm assuming the FA1778 is the one I should be shopping for?

Thanks in advance.

Re: Still confused on air filter

FA1778 is the 6.0 air filter since the 2003 launch. Not sure what the FA1746 is. I ran it on Motorcraft.com and it is not valid. If you have a 6.0, use the FA1778 to get the best filtration on the market.

Re: Still confused on air filter

Thanks. I ran across very little discussion on the actual part numbers here, thus the reason for my question.

My 6.0 Owner's Supplement which came with my '04 (Copyright 2003) shows the FA1746 as the required air filter. Guess I'll change that to FA1778.

Re: Still confused on air filter

Here's some interesting reading on the FilterMinder. I use one on my tractor as well and I'm convinced they work. Based on performance, UOA and fuel consumption.

http://www.filterminder.com/faq.asp

Take special note of #6 and what it says regarding diesel engine use.

I had one trip in a older veh. when water entered filter. Never from dirt.

but they DO go bad. i have seen a few that dont trip, and have had trucks come in for no power and black smoke concerns. on the test drive i have gone so far as to sometimes drive 1/2 mile to the gas station on the corner, remove the ari fitler, shove the box back on, and drive back to the shop. have done this twice where this totally corrected the problem and the filter minder was in the all ok zone.

I think it's safe to say that there are exceptions to every thing.
