Stuck in 4x4 Low Range

My 04 350 is stuck in 4x4 Low. It has the stupid little switch in the dash, not the more reasonable shift lever to engage 4x4. I only put it in low to slide it under my camper in the back yard and now it won't come out. Called the techs and they told me to drive it around the block and it should come out. It didn't. I kept one side on the gravel so it wasn't all 4 on dry pavement but no luck.

Has anybody else had this problem, is it common?

The thing is still under warranty so I can get them to tow it in and fix it but if it happened when I was in the boonies I wouldn't be very happy.

Re: Stuck in 4x4 Low Range

Read the information in your manual, I made this mistake, cannot remember how I got it out but it was in the manual.

Re: Stuck in 4x4 Low Range

How are you trying? You have to shift into nuetral, press the brake pedal, and switch out of 4 low. Wait for the 4 low light to go out. It usually takes a second or 2 before releasing the brake. If you don't hold the brake down and have the tranny in neutral, it will never shift out.

Re: Stuck in 4x4 Low Range

Take thetruck and shift it into drive, pull forward a little bit. Put the truck in to neutral, and then shift into revesre, and then shift into drive. If that does work take a rubber mallet and smack the crap out of the transfer case. Had this happen in my ranger and that would always work.

Re: Stuck in 4x4 Low Range

My 04 does this everyone once in awhile. Do the drive reverse thing, then neutral. When in neutral mash the brake pedal HARDER. Usually that does it for mine. The neutral safety switch or whatever it uses might not be reading the trucks in neutral. Works for mine everytime. Good luck.

Edit..... manke sure the A/C is off.

Re: Stuck in 4x4 Low Range

I had tried everything that has been suggested in earlier posts. What finally worked was beating in the transfer case shift motor with a plastic hammer. I guess I will have to add a nylon hammer to my F-Series tool kit.
Thanks to all who gave me suggestions. Tomorrow I go to the dealer to try to get the shift motor replaced.

Re: Stuck in 4x4 Low Range

My friends in California mocked me for getting manual hubs and a manual transfer case shift lever. My new Wyoming neighbors say, "It's too bad you can't get those on a Lariat!"

Re: Stuck in 4x4 Low Range

I had a hell of a time getting my '78 Chevy Blazer in 4wd hi or lo with the NP203 xfr case converted, by me, to part time. Bought my 96 Chevy with the 'push button' 4wd and worked like a champ, after I performed the service bulletin on it. That's why I got the push button.
