Been around here a while but have had no new issues until now....so here we go.
Drove all morning and the truck ran fine. Stopped at the local tackle shop and after I got back in the truck it started fine, but kinda was slow to go for some reason. I started driving and once I reached speed and I took my foot off of the gas, it did not respond very well when I put it back to fuel, blew a big cloud of black smoke and finally started going again. Kept doing this for the 10 mile trip home and after I got halfway home the check engine light came on. Would only do this on takeoff and cruising speed. Had bad turbos in my other 03' but did not sound like this...any ideas?
Got an appointment at Gresham Ford in the Morning but was curious what you guys thought.

It could easily be just an EGR valve. I assume you are still under warranty. If so, and it is your EGR valve, your emissions warranty will cover the repair 100% - so you pay ZERO deductible!

I was kinda thinking that. Under the master diesel tech site it says you should look for why the EGR valve is getting dirty. Should I be concerned or just keep cleaning it? Is there a root cause or is this something that just became a regular maintenance issue due to frequency?

There are root causes. It could be extended iding. It could be poor fuel quality. If you have clogged fuel filters and the fuel pressure drops the injectors suffer and you could have bad combustion. Similarly running with your air filter clogged can cause problems. Your injectors can suffer from poor oil condition as well.
Here is what I try to do meticulously:
Keep fuel, oil, and air filters properly maintained.
Use a synthetic 5W40 oil (helps prevent injector stiction) - change oil at 5k miles.
Re-route your ccv - stock system puts oil in the intake and is eventually burned. This can cause some coking.
Get the most recent flash from Ford - it has multiple benefits.
I use a good quality fuel additive (Stanadyne)

Hey I was curious...Gresham Ford said there was a 100.00 deductable regardless of service since I am 30-days out of 3/36 warranty. I do not have my owners manual anymore as someone liberated it from my vehicle sometime ago. Is there a separate emissions warranty with $0 ded.? I cannot check anymore.

Bad EGR Valve and they are going to replace the turbo just for good measure. Had them check the EGR cooler as well but he will not more on that until tomorrow.

I gotta dig into your statement on EGR being deductible free. I just had mine done and paid the 100 dollars too. If I find anything I will post it (right after I call my dealer)

Reason: More Information
Furthermore, (under emissions warranty), you will not be charged for labor, diagnosis, or parts for any emissions control device or system for 100k (ie no $100 deductible):
Air flow sensor
Air Fuel Feedback control System and sensors
Cold start enrichment system
Electronic engine control sensors and switches
EGR system
Exhaust manifold
Fuel Injection System
Intercooler Assembly - Engine Charger
Power Train Control Module Turbocharger Assembly
Also covered by the two emissions warranties (Emissions defect warranty and Emissions performance warranty):
All emisssions-related bulbs, hoses, brackets, tubes, gaskets, seals, belts, connectors, non-diesel fuel lines and wiring harnesses that are used with components on the list above.
Your turbo replacement should be w/ ZERO deductible also. tell the dealership you will be contacting Ford customer service if they do not agree w/ you:"
Well they charged me the 100.00 and said that the emissions warranty only covers the cat converter(he-he) and nothing else on >8500lbs. I told him I would forward the page so he could see it, but it will not come up.
Did not want to argue about the catalilic converter.
Nevermind...I found it.

This is a menu for all available manuals - including warranty manuals.
Click on "Owners Guides in the menu column on the left, and then follow the pop-up menu selection for your year and model and for your specific document.

I figured out how this works. The ford service dealer doesn't want to take any chances at lost revenue so they charge the deductible. When Ford pays them for the claim if the deductible is returned then they give it back to the consumer.
I got this from the Admin Lady when I was getting my check returned yesterday, they basically let ford decide .
So I would be slightly patient and speak to the administrative staff and not the service manager about this one. I would ask for a follow up when the claim gets paid by Ford or an ETA that you can call them.
May help may not but I bet on the fact you will get your 100 bucks back at that time. Just like I got mine.
And one further note this makes sense because when we first got our truck the FICM blew we paid the 100 deductibles and about a month later we got a check back.
