Tidbits from Ford Mechanic on 6.0 and 6.4

I had some work done on my truck in Canada. Talked to Brain, a well respected Ford Dealer diesel mechanic. Heres the tidbits: He said that the Ford Motor Company put International and Ford engineers in a virtual lockdown to come up with a "bullet proof" diesel engine. The key words were "bullet proof" Ford wants the best diesel engine made.
The 6.4 powerstroke is being tested on the freeways as we speak. This fact has been mentioned on this site. The twin turbos as well. This Brian thinks the new engine will get better mpg. ???? Hope he is right.

On the 6.0. He said Ford made a mistake with that engine. International design and not Fords. (thought I had heard it the other way around). Said the 03 were lined up out the door when the 6.0 came out. He had to rob parts from the other 6.0s. He also said they have had little problems with the newer 6.0s.

Re: Tidbits from Ford Mechanic on 6.0 and 6.4

I concur with the robbing of parts off stock units to fix customer's vehicles on the 03's... We did it all the time. But we have had our fair share of 04 and 05 problems. Turbos, wiring harnesses, HP oil pumps, sticking valves, head gaskets, EGR coolers, EGR valves, EBP sensors, ICP sensors, injectors, low pressure oil pumpr regulators, oil filter housing check valves, etc. The list goes on and on...

Re: Tidbits from Ford Mechanic on 6.0 and 6.4

IH motor "FMC electronics". Given the early on reflash problems, writing new programes & on going/updated r/c's. Giveth/taketh away so to speak. Not forgetting design flaws/QC & suppliers etc. Is that gonna happen w/6.4L, only time will tell.

Looking forward to seeing/hearing about "real world" 07 6.4L. 1st yr. production better be right this time. I want be getting one, but still interested. Good luck to those that do.

Prediction..After 07 6.4L's are first sold/delivered, short time later, factory incentives/rebates appear. JMO! maybe not?

Re: Tidbits from Ford Mechanic on 6.0 and 6.4

Next time you see Brain, mention that the 6.4 is also a Navistar design... AFAIK, Ford does not currently have an "in house" diesel engine program....

Re: Tidbits from Ford Mechanic on 6.0 and 6.4

Given how long this program's been in existence, I will give Ford the benefit of the doubt and assume the 6.4L will be a success right from the start.

Will I buy one, though? Not likely.

Yeah. You'd think any guy named "Brain" would know that.
