Re: Tire cracks on new King Ranch

My advice to you- get new tires- DECENT ones. Those Continentals are a JOKE for a truck as big and as expensive as what we own. Bad reports on these all around- they look like temporary spare doughnuts.

We have 1" of snow here- I just got stuck in my flat driveway, and had to pull the magic wand to get out. Last week, while going down a slight incline in wet grass- empty truck and empty light landscaping-type trailer behind me- I had my handshaker in first gear, and the whole rig slid down the hill, the trailer came around and dented my bed to the tune of $500. I'm a die-hard Ford man, but these tires SUCK! I ordered BFG 35" mud tires today.

Re: Tire cracks on new King Ranch

The Continentals are utter trash - I had them on my 2003 Expedition. Ford has gotten so bad at cost cutting, that I'm certain this will be my last Ford. I can't imagine how bad these things will be after a few more years of cost cutting.

Luckily for me, I have the BFGs on this truck, and at 40,000 miles, the treads look great.

Re: Tire cracks on new King Ranch

It's not just firestone having problems. I work at a Cadillac Dealer in Las Vegas here. We just got through a huge recall--replacing all four tires on all 2003-04 CTS cars--They are Goodyear Eagle RS-A tires. Recalled for tread separation---think Goodyear does not want to end up like Firestone?? I personally never saw any problems with the tires we removed, so maybe just isolated incident scared them in to replacing all of them nationwide to be sure. I have Goodyear Wrangler ATS tires on my truck and have no worries whatsoever. Would not want the continentals though---they belong on cars. JMHO--

Re: Tire cracks on new King Ranch

I finally got to take it to the dealer and show the crack. He then asked me if I'd like an estimate. An estimate for what? With 1877 miles on it? He said that Ford wouldn't honor the warranty because it could have been caused by road hazard. I suppose it could have been caused by rubber termites as well. I guess its just another way to weasel out of the so called bumper to bumper warranty.

Oh yeah, he did say that it should be replaced. I told him it wouldn't be another Continental, and it wouldn't be from Ford.

Re: Tire cracks on new King Ranch

Us '05 King Ranch owners are snakebit when it comes to tires. There just aren't that many choices for 18 inch tires.

My '04 came with Gy's. I have about 15k on them and rotated them twice so far no complaints. I hope by the time these wear out there are more choices in 18" tires. I would talk to the sales manager and tell him of your problem and see what he thinks you should do. If he doesn't see the light I would file a complaint with the DOT.

Re: Tire cracks on new King Ranch

Happy ending to this saga...the main reason I wanted the tires checked and the cracked one replaced was because I had a road trip coming up. The dealer where I bought the KR is 200 miles away, but I drive past it (Hillcrest Ford in Huntsville) on my way to Houston.

So I pull into the service area, and the service manager just happens to be the first guy I see. He looks at the crack and says right away he can tell it is a defect, not road hazard. He looks for a replacement Continental Contitrac, but they don't have any and will have to order one. I tell him that I don't really want to make an extra 400 mile round trip for a tire. So he gets another KR and pulls one of the tires off it and puts it on mine. Just one little problem, all of the KRs on the lot have Contitrac TR on the sidewall, and mine don't have the TR lettering. So he ends up replacing ALL FOUR TIRES for me. I was impressed, to say the least, especially after getting that line of BS about road hazard from the other dealer. Two thumbs up to Alan, who knows the meaning of the words "customer service".

WOW,
Thats great!

I'm happy for you that your purchasing dealer was that concerned about your safety and decided to do the right thing...

Good Luck with your King Ranch and enjoy.

Re: Tire cracks on new King Ranch

Wish I had your luck my truck had the BFGs' on the first tire splitting the dealer wouldn't help said to take to BFG dealer. They said it wasn't a defect I had to purchase new tire 200+ dollars. Well month ago got my second sidewall split and decided to lose the BFGs .
