Tranny help!?

This is the third time this truck has been in for a transmission problem (slamming into reverse 2x, now it shredded the planetary because of some roller or something), I wonder if I can get it boaught back, the problem is that I do truly love the truck. I have a warranty with "Ultimate Warranty Corporation" that is supposed to be bumper to bumper up to 125000 and they just told me they are going to deny the warranty coverage because 1) I have a hitch (5th wheel) in the back and that is a "modification", and 2) that it was a preexisting condition... grrr

37600 miles on it... go figure

Re: Tranny help!?

WOW, so these warranty places are really a scam! Shouldn't this be covered by the ford warranty? The way the lemon law usally works is 3x to a dealer for a warranty repair, and the thing still isn't fixed, you have to file with Ford to have a buy back. Then you have to go to arbrtration and IDK what after that. I am sure someone who has had a buy back will come in here soon. But yea 2004 truck with less than 100,000 def under Ford Warranty for the tranny.

Re: Tranny help!?

why would it still be under warranty for the tranny??? unless he has the extended warranty or something, the 100k mile (that i got w/ my truck) is engine only, and limited parts at that. my tranny is only covered under my [soon to expire] 36k mile warranty.

am i wrong??

Re: Tranny help!?

mudguppy is correct. however if your transmission assembly is replaced with a ford reman unit, you get 3/36 from the time of install.

Re: Tranny help!?

I'm PO'd that the tranny is not under the extended warranty I purchased to take the slack when the 36k mileage came (and went). I figured that since I had had issues with the tranny in the past that it was the weak link and that warranty coverage was a good idea. Now thinking to go with ATS or a local rebuild.

The 3/36 from Ford means probably the same problems popping up, plus it will cost $4100 vs an upgraded tranny interior for $3500. Just not sure which to get.

Re: Tranny help!?

The harsh reverse engagement most likely was due to the planetary failure. As the pin starts walking out in the planet assembly, it rubs on the ring gear hub, contaminating the fluid with metal debris. The solenoids in the torqueshift are extremely sensitive to contamination. If it was in 2 times prior for harsh reverse engagement, chances are they overlooked what was the actual cause. Planetary pin rubbing, contaminated fluid with metal, metal found its way to solenoid and stuck solenoid, causing harsh reverse engagement. These transmissions don't have many problems. The planetary was fixed under a recall, although there have been some that failed outside of recall dates. I wouldn't be overly worried about transmission after it is properly repaired.

Re: Tranny help!?

Agreed.... the TorqShift is a pretty skookum transmission. The only real concerns I have seen have been the ones "built in" - snap ring placement, planetary pins....

I wonder if one of the transmission recalls wasn't done on this unit or if the owner wasn't a victim of "flat rate" diagnostics...

Re: Tranny help!?

No kidding grampy, Ford should cover that trans sight unseen.

Not PO5 or P07 but at no charge to the customer.....

Wait, doesn't the recall apply even if he is out of warranty???

Modification my left eye. Your extended warranty sucks and it's none of their business that it was a pre-existing condition, Ford really should be covering this for you but if they don't this extended warranty company should.

If they don't, sue them.

This is one of those cut-rate extended warranties that Auto-Jim was warning about.

LOL, bet they would have said the same thing if you had a 2 5/8's ball in the reciever.

How about cancel the worthless policy, and get back the unused portion of the premium.

Re: Tranny help!?

As I come out of the shock of this, I am beginning to believe that the tranny has been bad since the beginning. I am going to get my "warranty" money back because it is a serious rip-off. Ultimate Warranty is the name of the business. Stay away! I suppose that any aftermarket warranty, excluding probably the Ford one, are just rip-offs. The catch is that if they do payout and you decide to cancel the "warranty", probably because they try to back out of a claim, you have to pay anything they paid and then get a pro-rated refund. I read the contract, but it didnt hit me til now what WHY that was in there.

This is my 3rd new Ford in a row. Started with a 91 after I got back from Desert Storm, got this after Iraq. I really like it, but I dont have a clue how to get Ford to stand behind me and help. I was told that because I had bought an aftermarket warranty that Ford wouldnt do anything.

Re: Tranny help!?

I am unsure of the specified coverage on any of the trans recalls. Looking at it from one angle, the customer would have been notified of the program.... If the customer decided to ignore the field service action and, instead, drove the transmission to destruction, who should pay the added expense?

Re: Tranny help!?

I honestly don't want to go back and read but it appears as though he was complaining about the condition under warranty.

Cut and dried in my book with or without the greater expenses.

Re: Tranny help!?

You guys are right about the aftermarket warranties..they are a rip off. I work at a Lincoln Mercury/ Mercedes dealer and I see customers come in with all kinds of warranties. They hardly cover anything when it comes time for a claim although they appear to cover a lot when you buy them. Then they have the balls to tell us that they only pay $40.00 an hour labor! They actually think that we will cut our labor in half just for them. My adviser tells them they can pay whatever they want because he bills the customer and lets him fight it out with the warranty company. The weird part is you can buy a Ford warranty for any kind of used car and they cover a lot of stuff compared to the other companies. They work great for Mercedes customers because if one module goes bad it pretty much paid for itself. Ironic isn't it?

Whoa Whoa Whoa Hold the phone here. My trans was just replaced at 27k miles with a Ford Remanufactured on top of that 4 days after the new install I get a check guages warning and a flashing tow/haul light. They ended up replacing my temp sending unit. I was told its only covered to the end of my 36k warranty. IF this is not the case then I will be going back on tuesday with a not so smiley face as they are used to seeing me with.
