Trans / transfer case questions

2004 F-450 with a 6.0L-auto, If one were to convert a 2 wd to a 4wd, would the existing auto trans work as it has the bosses for an adapter plate to bolt up to? I'm not sure if the output shaft is the same or not. Or would the transmission have to be changed, if so any ideas on where to find low mileage parts for this? It will be getting a floor shift model transfer case.

Re: Trans / transfer case questions

Can't help on the trans question but this is going to be a spendy adventure. At least you have leaf spring suspension on your side. There will be some module reprogramming or replacement issues. The PCM, the HEC and the ABS module will all need to be "told" that they are now in a 4X4. You may need to "borrow" the VIN of a similarly equipped unit to get the correct as-built data.

Re: Trans / transfer case questions

From a strictly mechanical stand point, if you have a 4X2 with a fixed flange drive shaft unit, the adapter will accept a transfer case. Like this:

Obviously, a shorter driveshaft would be needed, but the location of the transmission mount to the cross member is the same.

If your unit has a slip yoke drive shaft, the output shaft is different, along with the thrust bearing that is in front of the park gear. Need less to say the extension housing would have to be changed as well as the drive shaft, among other things.
