Transfer case will not go into 4 low

I took the new truck hunting today and went to locked it in 4 high for awhile and everything seemed to work fine. I got to a pretty hairy spot so i thaught maybe I will put her in 4 low and see what she has. The transfer case would not enage into 4 low at all. I even had trouble getting it back into 4high and 2 wheel drive again.

Has anyone ever had this happen to them before ? I will be taking it to the dealership to see whats going on but thaught I would ask a few of you first

Re: Transfer case will not go into 4 low

Assuming that you have ESOF, did you ensure that the trans was in neutral (or the clutch pushed in), that the brake was applied and you were travelling less than 3 mph?

What is ESOF ?

[/ QUOTE ]

Electronic Shift on the Fly, whereas you shift the T-case with a knob on the dash.

From the Owner's manual:

ESOF
Electronic shift on the fly (ESOF) 4x4 system (if equipped)
If equipped with the Electronic Shift 4WD System, and 4WD Low is selected while the vehicle is moving, the 4WD system will not engage. This is normal and should be no reason for concern. Before 4WD Low can be engaged, the vehicle must be brought to a complete stop, the brake pedal depressed and the transmission placed in N (Neutral ) (on automatic transmissions or the clutch pedal depressed on manual transmissions).

MANUAL 4WD SYSTEM (T-Case stick on floor)
Shifting from 4H (4WD High) to 4L (4WD Low)
1. Bring the vehicle to a complete stop.
2. Depress the brake.
3. Place the gearshift lever in N (Neutral) (automatic transmission) or
depress the clutch (manual transmission).
4. Move the transfer case shift lever
through N (Neutral) directly to 4L
(4WD Low).
5. If the transfer case will not
engage into 4L (4WD Low), drive
the vehicle above 8 km/h (5 mph),
then repeat steps 1 through 4.
Shifting from 4L (4WD Low) to 4H (4WD High) or 2H (2WD High)
1. Bring the vehicle to a complete stop.
2. Depress the brake.
3. Place the gearshift lever in N (Neutral) (automatic transmission) or
depress the clutch (manual transmission).
4. Move the transfer case shift lever
through N (Neutral) directly to 4H
(4WD High) or 2H (2WD High).
5. If the transfer case will not
disengage from 4L (4WD Low), drive
the vehicle above 8 km/h (5 mph),
then repeat steps 1 through 4.
6. If shifting to 2H (2WD High) with
the vehicle at a complete stop, disengage the locking hubs (optional) by
rotating the hub lock control from LOCK to FREE.

PARK is your problem. Needs to be in neutral.

I have the lever on my '97 and while I *can* get it in and out of 4LO in Park if I really really wail on it, it slides in and out so much easier if I'm in Neutral. The new electronic control simply enforces that fact, to make it easier on itself.

Yep, gotta be in neutral with a foot on the brake pedal regardless of whether it is ESOF or manual.

Yep, gotta have foot on the break and in neutral.
Owners manual says less than 3mph. I just stop and do the above.
I haven't had any issues.
I use 4WD Low at least 2 times a month.

Re: Transfer case will not go into 4 low

Still would not work with it in nuetral so I took it to the dealership and had a tech look at it and he said it seems like it needed some attention. Said that there is a external adjustment that should correct the problem. I will post it if thats the issue.
