Re: Transmission service

I hope at least you got a kiss from all the service people at that dealership after they had their way with you. Because that is what they did. The 6.0/Torqueshift Superduty is the easiest truck I have owned for the do-it-yourselfer(and you know the job is done right). The inline filter cost about $10 online, MerconSP about $4 a quart at the dealer. I buy 20 quarts. I drive the truck to get the tranny fluid nice and hot, I remove the drain plug, drain the fluid, drop the pan(gasket reusable) wipe it clean(check the magnet for chips), internal filter(screen) doesn't need replacing, reinstall, change out inline filter, refill, drive the truck for a while to get the oil temp back up, once again drain the pan and refill. Good to go for another 30k. I do change out the inline filter every other oil change(10k).

Re: Transmission service

I've pretty much made up my mind to do just as you have described from this point on. I wanted to let the dealer do the first service, though, because I have already dropped one tranny in this truck (hadn't even made the first payment yet and it took a dump). No problems since it was replaced. But since I only have about 6K miles of the bumper to bumper warranty, I didn't want to give FMC any reasons for not repairing/replacing the transmission if it were to fail again in the next 6K miles.

And no...I didn't even get kissed (Thank God!)

Re: Transmission service

I have 53000 on my truck. I had the first tranny serviced at the dealership. I now want to do my own. What records do I have to keep to ensure the warrenty. I have one of those extended warrenties that ford gave in the buy back process. Do I have to have it done at the dealership. If not am I heading for trouble if the tranny bites the dust.

Re: Transmission service

I would just keep a log of the mileage and date when you performed the service. I'd also keep the receipts to prove that you purchased the supplies to do the service. This is what I have done so far as far as oil changes and fuel filter changes go.

Re: Transmission service

J50, also thinking about doing mine.

CaptS.
Apparently 20 qts. enough for 2 drains you did. How many qts. did you add after draining each time? TIA

FWIW Maybe same for ours, but do recall on the F150 when dealers started using flush mch.( t tec?) for a/t. FMC dealer I talked to at that time said internal filter screen didnt need changing. Even the independent guys were saying same. Do recall, some had screen replaced/some didnt. Obviously there's a cost diff. Dont recall if actual time/mi. spec. when to chg.

Re: Transmission service

J50, What's the part number or size of the O-Ring for the FT145 filter. Or do you just re-use the old one everytime you change it out?

Re: Transmission service

I keep all my purchase receipts in a log book in the glove box, I enter the date and mileage of the service I do. I have never had any problems with warranty due to doing the work myself. I think when you remove the drain plug on the transmission pan, out drains about 8 quarts. I have 3 quarts left from the 20 I bought. Changing out the inline filter every 10,000 miles does use up a bit of fluid, I just top off, never overfilling.

Re: Transmission service

Flush it
1. Get the tranny hot
2. Drain the pan then refill it.
3. Raise the rear wheels off the ground
4. Disconnect the return line at the tranny.
5. If the tranny isn’t hot, fluid will blow back out the return line hole. Get a 1/2” flare plug (Lowes stock them) and cut the tip/chamfer end off to the threads. Use this to plug the return line hole in the tranny.
6. Get some clear tubing and shove it onto the disconnected return line. (I think I got 1/2” ID to slide on)
7. Run the tubing into a 5 gal bucket
8. Have an assistant start the truck and idle it through the gears as you continue to add fluid.
9. Watch for the color change in the return line fluid and then shut down the motor. (I ran through an extra qt or two once the color changed)
10. Replace the inline filter, hook everything back up, and your done!

I used 21 qts to flush it. The specs say it holds 19.2.

If you just drain the pan, here's what you end up with:
Using Ford's capacity specs of 19.2qts/tranny and 7.5/pan, draining the pan and refilling results in the following dilution rates:

1st Drain and Fill
Old fluid 11.7qts/61%
New fluid 7.5qts/39%

Someone said in might be a better idea to drain/fill the pan, drive it, then do another drain/fill. This would be better than one drain/fill but you waste a lot of new fluid.

2nd Drain and Fill
Old fluid 7.1qts/37%
New fluid 12.1qts/63%
wasted clean fluid to obtain this ratio = 2.9qts

3rd Drain and Fill
Old fluid 4.3qts/23%
New fluid 14.9qts/77%
wasted clean fluid to obtain this ratio = 7.6qts

4th Drain and Fill
Old fluid 2.6qts/14%
New fluid 16.6qts/86%
wasted clean fluid to obtain this ratio = 13.4qts

Or........ Take to dealer, exchange pleasantries with SA about the hot weather, sit in A/C'd waiting room watching the Tyra show, drinking bad coffee and flipping through a July 2003 issue of Time magazine, listen for your name, pay about $140, flirt with the cashier and watch as she flashes a shy smile that turns into a snaggle tooth grin with that "I go to lunch at 12, pick me up in front of parts and I'll tear you up big boy" look in her eye, scamper out dropping your CC and recipt, drive off....quickly - driving off in the opposite direction of home hoping to throw her off.
