Truck quits

Hi there everyone I don't understand what is happening. Every so often I loose all electrical power and the truck just shuts down just like that. The truck is a 2003 f250 with the 6.0L. Also I keep getting a battery light coming on. Would this indicate an alternator issue? It has 183,000 on her

Pull and bench test the alternator.

I would also charge and then individually load test the batteries.

Continuing down this path (with electrical issues) can kill your FICM.

I would suggest you check your wires and connections for cleanliness and possible breaks as well. Focus on the red wire coming off the drivers side battery and the fuse box next to it.

Truck quits

So the alternator has been rebuilt, so now on the way to work the truck acts like it wants reset everything and I lose electrical power but it all comes back. The engine did not shut down.

Did you check the wires as Phil G. suggested and load test the batteries as I suggested?

After having the truck towed back to the house I discovered something really odd....why is there 2 batteries for the 6.0? I pulled the cables off the drivers side battery and the truck starts and runs fine. Battery issues maybe?

There are two batteries because of the heavy demand of the glow plugs and hi power starters required on a diesel. All diesel pickups use 2. The fact that you moved the red batt cable on the DS batt to disconnect it and the problem resolved brings me back to my hunch you have an issue with the heavy red wire connected to the "+" post on that battery. I'll bet if you wiggle that red wire just the right way, you can get the problem to repeat itself.

Good suggestion Phil G. And, he also needs to INDIVIDUALLY load check the batteries as well.

And both batteries good and the same or same cold cranking amps and size. Otherwise 1 can drag the other down. if 1 won't hold a charge then the other wont either because the bad 1 will drain the good one.

ALWAYS replace 6.0 batteries as a pair. If one load tests weak; replace them both. The batteries need to be a matched set of they are constantly fighting each other as they are connected (the weak one is discharging the strong one, the strong one is trying to charge the weak in an attempt to reach an equilibrium that is impossible).
