Turbo Farts???

While pulling a trailer back from the deer lease this weekend, we started getting a strange "missing" type of condition. This took place when under a load going up hills and when the engine was running below 2000 rpms. It started acting like a miss and you could hear a noise under the hood like air swooshing. Also you could see the boost gauge fluxuating whn this happened.
Is this the turbo farts?

Re: Turbo Farts???

My 05 has done this from Day 1 on long grades when in OD either pulling or empty. Usually happens just before it downshifts to the next lower gear. As soon as the downshift happens, the turbo farting stops.

Re: Turbo Farts???

On the soap box.

Access gas/pressure can be released via:

A "fart" which exits the "rear" which is the trucks exhaust.

A "burp" or "cough" which exits the front/mouth which is the trucks intake.

Turbo Burp or Turbo Cough makes more sense. You could never even hear if the turbo farted. :biggrin"

Off the soapbox.

Mine's doing it more but also other issues as the EP sensor has failed again and the dealer did not replace it - only reflashed it and it's not the same flash as the new recall.

If you were truly lugging it, it would be normal as mine always was. Mine's no longer normal, although in all fairness, the tuner may have been calling for too much boost in these conditions. I'm hopefully going to tow this week with it stock and I'll see.

Re: Turbo Farts???

I guess they call it a turbo fart since the exit of the turbo (its rear end) is fluctuating which in turn feeds the intake. I would call an engine fart a miss that you would hear in the exhaust.

Re: Turbo Farts???

Sticky VGT vanes will cause this, the PCM wants a little less boost, the controls are stuck and when they break free it goes to far. The boost then drops way off making the noise your hearing. Then the PCM wants to close the turbo up a little, again it goes too far and starts cycling. It will buck and fart all the way up the hill. Take a look at my other post on how to clean the turbo, or maybe now that Ford has a TSB on it, they'll do it for you.
