U joint, Carrier bearing, or Wheel bearing?

I posted last week about a clunking sound from underneath the truck after the dealership removed the bed to replace the fuel tank sending unit. After driving the truck for a few days it seems like it is a drivetrain related noise, and is more of a grinding sound. Checked the bed bolts, replaced whells and tires with my spare set to rule out a bad tire, checked the hubs, and checked the fuel tank straps. The sound starts at 35 mph and is real loud between 35-40 mph. It increases in speed as the truck accelerates, but at 50 + it is less noticable then between 35-40 mph? Any one have any idea? I just dont want to back to the dealer blind. The truck is a 05 F-250 cc 4x4 lariat.

May not help you much, but i have a whirring/humming noise at around 60mph on up. Never noticed it when new, but its too early for bearings. Im thinking maybe the tires are making some noise since they havent been rotated in 10,000 miles....

Re: U joint, Carrier bearing, or Wheel bearing?

Well I fixed it. It has been making me crazy for 4 days now so I pulled it in the garage, and double checked all of the easy stuff. I jacked the front wheels up and rolled them, and the drivers side was smooth, but the passenger side had a small catch in it. I got underneath the truck and rolled it, and noticed that the front driveshaft to the passenger side wheel was turning. I checked the hub, and it was not locked, so I turned it to lock and turned it back to auto, and no more driveshaft movement? Test drove it, and problem solved. But what would cause it to stick? And could there be any damage from driving it around with the driveshaft turning?
