Water in fuel light is flashing when I turn corners, so i decided to claw under her and loosen the plug and drain it. I put the 6mm hex wrench in the slot and with very little torq of my hand the threads stripped out????? I'd liked to get ahold of the so called engineer who came up with the 6mm hex wrench design and were they thought it was a convient location for draining. HA HA.... This is like the 4th time it has been drained all by me. I called the parts deptment and asked for a plug thinking I'd somehow get this one out. Parts guy told me he'd have to order a plug, but would order a new pump/ filter assembly as the tech might not get the plug out, and he would have the s.ad. write it up under warrenty as it is in a terrible location and not very accesible for the less then 3 minutes it should take to drain it. Anybody else have any problems with the stupid plug design?? Ford has some great engineers, and some great dipstick engineers we pay good money to.
25,524 miles and would not give her up, although the little problems.

Yes this has been around before. Ford now makes a steel plug so you can't strip it. I never stripped mine, but I bought a steel plug in case. $7.00 I think.

Almost as bad of a design as the black dip stick. A first prize winner.

Flash.
I don't let it drain totally down figuring any water will be at the bottom. I usually drain when the water symbol goes on in turns or hard braking, 3 times in 20,000 miles. I thought I was the only one too blind to read that stupid black dip stick I use a white paper towel to see where the oil is. Dumb!

I'm definetly telling them i want the steel plug when it goes in to get the stripped one out, or the whole assembly gets get changed out. It's be on me why they would use a brass threaded plug with a hex wrench, when they know it will be removed from time to time. I think its another way they knew it would keep money rollin' in!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The Ford part number for the steel plug with o-ring is: 3C3Z-9A214-AB and it is called "One Adaptor". If I recall correctly it is about $7 or $8. Mine was ordered and took a few days.

Thanks for the part #. I'll take it and get with the parts guy and see if he even knows about it, my guess is he does'nt since he hasn't said anything to me about it.

When and took truck in today for the stripped plug. dealer told me they have 2 on hand at all times because of the problem with the stripping of the plug. Anyway they told me that they have to change the whole unit out per ford motor company, and they did. New unit is the updated verison i was told, and yes it looks different and the drain plug has deeper threads. of course I had no problems with them changing it out. I was wrote up at 8:50 and back on the road at 9:35. Yes the parts guy had no clue on the steel plug either, no surprise like you said.

I would go ahead and take the original brass plug out and install the new steel unit as soon as possible. When I stripped the brass plug, I had to remove the entire pump unit, disassemble it, and attempt to drill the old plug out.Unfortunately, it was frozen in there pretty good and had to purchase a new drain plug cover plate anyway.
