Howdy Folks,
Here's the story. This summer my Engine overheated during a bumper to bumper crawl on the highway. Pulled over as soon as I could, it puked a little and I let it cool down. Problem was the fan did not come on. Took it to Ford, got an oil change and flush and fill with the new improved GOLD priced coolant. Engine runs much better, still gets up in OIL temps on long hills (220 to 230 degrees). No smoke, no fluid losses BUT I detect a burnt oil or exhaust smell after the engine is fully warmed and the heater fan is on. I see no drips, no oil on the exhaust pipes - just the weird smell, kinda like exhaust and tranny oil - but again - no loss of fluids. I have the Bully Dog PMT for guages - set on tow performance - nothing higher. Mileage is 240K KM's, all new injectors last spring.
What to check next? Thanks All.

Have you considered power washing all the areas around where the spill was? Any fluids, oils and etc left in a nook or crany some place could continue to "cook" and cause weird smells for quite a while. My '93 plow truck started smelling better, now that the dead mice that nested in the muffler have finally been completely incinerated!
That was a smell I just could not get used to.

Good Point! - I'll do that - also I had them pressure test the cooling system when they did the flush and they reported it held pressure with no loss.

If your fan doesn't kick on, I would be looking at that further. IIRC, only the Ford IDS has the ability to command it on though, so a trip to the dealer would be required.

Yup - they fixed that when they did the flush & fill, it comes on much sooner now and really drops the coolant temps, the oil temps follow that a little more slowly.

I got the same smell after my engine was pulled for a bed plate repair. Did you ever find what was causing your smell. I would like to know if and when you do so I can use your information.
Not yet - going to have the engine shampooed this weekend and that wil eliminate - I hope - the possibility that it was spilled liquid caught in some valley some place. I'll let you know - but with my luck .................

Not yet, taking my truck to the dealer on Monday (10-02-09) to get it looked at. Let me know if you find the source of your problem and I will do the same.
Thanks
Well I don't have anything to add. The dealer kept my truck for a week and also noticed the oil type smell coming from the air vents. They also noticed you would get the smell when the truck was stoped like at a stop sign or a stop light. They could not find the cause of the smell. Everything was dry and no oil leaks or exhaust leaks. Anybody have any ideas?
Shampooed the engine - now I get a Nice shampoo smell - along with Exhaust smell - Guess I should have used Glade air freshner on it. So now it's off to the dealer so they can tell me which fuse turns on the tail/side lights that crapped out.

Loose bolts on exhaust manifold tightened, Turbo clamp leaked at full load - tightened.
Smell pretty much gone - some residual I expect will fade away in a short time.
