What leaks oil right by the starter?

All, I've got an 07 with approximately 4000 miles. Today I noticed the cast part of the block right at the bell housing (just above the oil pan and behind the starter) was wet with oil.

I know oil leaks can come from anywhere but as you can tell by the mileage, the truck is still clean enough to determine that the oil is not draining from up above, it's definitely coming from where the block and the trans meet, or somewhere right above the starter. It really seems more evident on the starter side.

Rear main? Bed plate (not quite sure where this is)?

I'm hating to have to take the truck in with just 4000 miles...

i'd put money on a crankshaft sensor or the bed plate. also could be CAC fittings but i doubt it with 4000 miles.

Send a message via AIM to Stosh 6.0
I have a 2007 6.0 and i noticed a oil spot on the ground and when i looked at it it looked like it was coming from the rear engine seal. but when the dealership looked at it it was something with the power steering pump seal

Mooch..look here 6L Bed Plate..then try index. Maybe you'll spot where leaking? Good luck!

btw..if just residue & not actual dripper..you might consider waiting for awhile before taking in. JMO!

I think I see where the bed plate seam is, but unless it's seeping from that point behind the starter or along the rear of the engine, that doesn't immediately look like it to me. I'll take another look with a high-powered flashlight tomorrow.

And to top it off, the truck threw a CEL tonight on my ride home...

I have a leak in the exact same spot that the truck is going in tomorrow for a diagnosis. It is leaking about a baseball sized spot on the floor each day. This after it came back from the dealer 2 weeks ago to fix a much more minor leak in the same area. They replaced the rear main seal and another pressed in seal. Putting that warranty to work lately. Besides the leak it has been flawless.

Are other 2007 owners having bedplate leak problems? When I bought the truck a couple of years back, I was under the impression that this was an issue with the earlier 6.0s and had been corrected by 2007.

That's funny because mine is starting to leak on the right side. The bed plate is on the left side I think. It may be the Crank Position Sensor as that is on the right side. Mine has had a little oil since new but I didn't do anything about it. It has gotten worse but mine seems to be 'wet' on the right side and not the left.

I always thought the bedplate was the whole lower part of the block.

I'll lose my mind if the truck requires what I've read about the repair for the bedplate leak at only 4000 miles. I tend to be a little obsessive about my truck and I can't imagine I'd keep it. I'll stay optimistic that it's something simple.

I didn't know that much about the bedplate. If mine's leaking, it is out of warranty, I'm not fixing it. I've read other things that the bedplate leaking isn't that common but is misdiagnosed as leaking. I don't know because I'm no diesel mechanic.

I got mine back today and it was the crank position sensor. Guess the upper part of the o-ring blew out per the dealer. Said my bed plate looked good thankfully.
