White Smoking and Low Coolant

Morning All,

I have a 2005 6.0 with 64k. Started it up yesterday for a return trip from Waco to Dallas. The truck immediately started blowing out white smoke. I've seen this a time or two before (especially on cold mornings), so I didn't think too much about it.

Going down the road, the truck would be normal if I kept my foot on the accelerator. When I lifted my foot, the truck blew a thick white cloud of smoke. The truck ran fine as far as power and idling.

Got as far north as Whitney, TX (took the back roads to stay off I-35) when the temperature gauge spiked. I checked the resovoir and found it to be dry. The was an auto parts store open in Whitney and I put 1 gal of Zerex G-05 and 1 gal of water. Made it home (about 90 miles) and had to put in 1 more gal of Zerex.

I'm going to the dealership today. I think I will be looking at a head gasket job. Maybe a stuck injector. Who knows ... I'll post a follow up with the news. Wish me luck.

Re: White Smoking and Low Coolant

Please pardon the reply to my own post ... just a quick update. I heard from the dealership that the problem is a leaking EGR cooler. I did a search on the site and saw that I am not the only one (seems like a problem area).

QUESTION: Did drawing the coolant through the cynlinders and turbo cause additional damage? Should I be concerned about collateral damage?
