WIF light, changing out the HFCM

I bought an 04 F250 with an 6.0 PSD last Aug with only 41000 miles........last week the fuel in water light came on for the first time. So I drained the HFCM and thought they had fixed it. But the light came back on the next day, drained again to only come back on. Went to Ford and was told to first run out fuel and see if new fill-up fixes problem. But after reading posts here, beginning to feel it is the HFCM that needs replacing. I have two questions........is it possible to change this HFCM myself and what will it take to accomplish it? Second, is Ford the only place to get one or would IH have one cheaper that would work as good as Ford's?

pull the drain plug out and drain it then spray brake clean in it with the straw should clean it out works 90% for the time.

I had this same issue and i tried all the tricks. I finally had to take the cover plate off the thing and completely clean both inside of the box and the cover. this fixed the problem and it has not returned.

I am experiencing the same problem at 88,700 miles. My 5/100,000 runs out in two weeks. One of the diesel techs at the local dealer told me that there is a redesigned HFCM, which does away with the fuel heater and the WIF light problem. What the two have in common is beyond me, but I'm getting this fixed, before the "OH S#!T" warranty runs out.

Any of the other mek-a-necks here know anything about this "improved" HFCM?

i installed a new HFCM recently and it did not have a fuel heater..

get yourself a set of fuel line disconnect tools and it'll take less than an hour to R/R...it's a very simple swap..

The whole HFCM does not need to be replaced to fix the WIF sensor. Remove the cover plate that holds the drain plug, and you can access the WIF sensor. The replacement sensor comes with a new pigtail that does not have the fuel heater connection. You'll also need a new gasket for the cover plate. Parts are under $100 if I recall. Should be a $100 deductible if you're under the 5/100.

Just talked with my service advisor. Truck is going in tomorrow for the HFCM replacement and passenger side exhaust leak, which was noted by the tech last time truck was in for repairs. Might as well get everything done at once. I wonder if I can get them to replace the degas bottle, since it still has a bunch of crud in it.

I'm having the same issue with my '06 at 110,000 miles. Is it really safe to spray brake cleaner. Any chance of the break cleaner getting into the fuel system and causing major problems?

thanks for the info.......

I will look at trying the brake cleaner fix when I get my truck back next week, fordboyyfm. Its in the collision repair shop for another problem that happened over the weekend.....tire blew out on driver front causing damage to fender, running board, and spoiler connect point on bumper. Appreciate all the info given and still open for more.

Thanks fordboy. I'll give it a shot tonight and let you know if it fixes my problem. My dealer said it would be around $200 to replace it so I'm hoping to save some money. Thanks Again....

Just spoke to my dealer this afternoon. The HFCM needs to be replaced and is covered under the 5/100,000 warranty. My coverage ends in 12 days.

That's lucky, I would have found out 13 days later
