Which year of 6.0 to buy?

Friend is beginning to look for a CC LB Dually 6.0 PSD.

I've suggested by watching the intro of the 6.0 to lean towards the 04's or later. He's found a low mileage 03' says he can get it for a good price.. Go Figure.

We're both diehard Ford Men.. So, I was trying to give him a bit of an advanced learning on the 6.0L before he got to serious. I've still got the tried and true 7.3, but occasionaly poke around on the 6.0 forums as well.

If memory serves me correctly, didn't they upgrade the 04' 6.0L with a multitude of changes around the Oct. 03 time frame?

I know it was Mayish 03' time frame that they changed injector designs.

I know he could be reading for months on here, but I figured a few of you could provide some sound suggs before he goes hunting tomorrow....

Thanks all,

Musclford

Re: Which year of 6.0 to buy?

I tend to agree with grounder--buy a 7.3. While there are a bunch of happy 6.0 owners out there, the amount of complaints regarding the 6.0 seems pretty disporportionate (spelling?) to the number of complaints regarding 7.3s. Yes, I know that the 7.3s were not perfect, but it seems to me that I hear a lot more issues regarding the 6.0. The head of the Montana Dept of Consumer Protection told me that Ford has had to buy back a lot of F350s with the 6.0L here in MT.

I have avidly read this site since finding it in about 1999 or so and the only reason that I have a 6.0 is we were stationed overseas until this last summer. I bought a new truck hoping to get one that wouldn't have to be in the shop all the time....... I love my truck (see signature) when it runs right--which it hasn't for the last 12,000 miles!! I'm hoping that the new 05 that Ford is giving me will be trouble free, but frankly, I am now pretty dubious about the 6.0's reliability........

So, tell your friend to either buy a well maintained 7.3 OR buy a brand-new 6.0L, which will then be covered by warrenty AND Lemon Law (hopefully your state has a good lemon law).

Scott

Try working on them all day long. The 7.3 is a far more reliable engine. JMHO

Ok I'll bite.............

Buy a '05 or an '06 coming up for order in a couple months. If you took every thing bad sad about the 6.0 and placed it with the truck that was complained about. You would find a few bad ones and some that drive and drive. They got a bad rap when ford started the reflash campains (spelling?)

Re: Which year of 6.0 to buy?

As far as reliability goes. I do not work on many 04s built after 04/04. I do not now why for sure. But most o4s that I do work on are built 02-04 to 04-04. We sell 100s of these trucks and I have only had to work on few 05s so far. The 05s will have a better resale value because of the design changes.

I would not buy a 7.3 without a detailed service record. If the Tranny fluid hasn't been changed out, your Friend will be looking at $2k tranny bill down the road for sure. The 05 seems to have the bugs worked out.(Knock wood)

Re: Which year of 6.0 to buy?

I had an '02 7.3- loved it, but wanted a new truck. It was dependable and powerful- I had a clutch slave cyl. go after one year, and a throttle sensor go after 2-1/2 years- probably my fault for spraying out the rubber floor with a hose and not knowing about the sensor (ignorance is NOT bliss).

I curently own an '05. Love it. Quiet, even more powerful, and efficient. Ford cut some corners in '05- no inner fender liner in the rear, the cloth seat material is cheaper than my '02, and the radio (single cd player) SUCKS! This engine does not have much power in the low rpm range- theres a skinny pedal on the right side of the floorboard that takes care of that- but once it's revved up, it SCREAMS!

Purchase info- from what I've heard, '03's were a problem child, '04's were better, '05's better still. Personally, I'd wait until Ford was taking orders for '06's unless you have to have a truck right now. There's nothing quite like getting a truck that is equipped exactly the way you want it. If you read this site often- remember- if it ain't broke, we rarely hear about it.

As far as 7.3's go- I heard that Ford quit using forged rods in the later mfg. dates. Mine was making an awful noise- but only for a few minutes, then it quit. Skeered the heck outta me. I had heard that some of those units were coming apart- that's partially why I got rid of the 7.3. I felt like the kid on Old Yeller that had to shoot his dog. Maybe someone more in the know than I will chime in and let you know when Ford went to the cheaper rods, and some stats on the ensuing fallout. Happy hunting! Re: Which year of 6.0 to buy?

I have been told by many folks in the know that the problems with the engine began to get resolved on the second build cycle of the 04 release. Take that for what it is worth.

The newer 6.0, 04 and up have been a lot better but still have issues the Ford passed on to the customers and are trying to repair with the PCM TCM and FICM re flashes. The re flashes don't get much respect around TDS but they really fix a lot of the issues these engine have. I have not had many customers complain after we did this stuff but we would let them know about the pilot injection not working after and the engine will be nosier before doing any re flashes. Rumors have it that Ford really shook up this 6.0 engineering team but I have nothing in writing on this, just rumors, same as the 6.4 twin turbo that are floating around. I don't see the 6.0 lasting as long as the 7.3 for the durability end of things. JMHO There is just to much stuff that can go wrong and when turning up the wick with power adders it will make it die that much faster.
I am going to get flamed for this one but The 6.0 will out last the Duramax with what I see happening around here but think the Cummins will out last them all. JMHO

You hit the nail on the head that time. I couldn't have said it better myself.

I WILL add that in the last 4-5 months I have seen fewer and fewer 6 Liters in for problems.

Re: Which year of 6.0 to buy?

Take this with a grain of salt since I only have 5500 miles on my '05. I just gave my '99 to my son with 190K. The '99 served me well, but I am glad I bought the '05. It is much quiter, has the torqueshift tranny with the tow/haul mode, integrated trailer brake controller...which works better than the Prodigy that I left with my '99..I know that the integrated controller in the '05 is made by Prodigy, but it works even better than the other one if that is possible. The turning radius is smaller and they come stock with larger brake rotors and larger tires...either 17's or 18's...your choice. In addition, I read an article in I think "Powerstrke Registry" by someone from Ford. They claim that when you compare all the figures, that the 7.3 L had issues when it was first introduced and the 6.0 has had some issues, but not any more than the 7.3's. When push comes to shove, the figures are about the same. Like some have said, you don't read about another airplane landing safely...only those that crash. I love my '05.

Welp folks thanks for your 2 cents, but believe it or not, I recommended him to goto my salesman, he walks in, tells him what he wants and bingo walked away with an 2000 CC 7.3L Dually 4x4 Lariat, 98K miles, and new front tires... for around $21K that was traded in yesterday. Didn't even have it prepped yet..

Thanks again..
