01 F-550 Rollback no boost turbo not home?!?!?!

I have a 01 rollback that I just bought and there is nooooo power from this powerstroke!!!! I have checked the air hoses for leaks none I checed to see that the turbo is free and it does spin by hand so took the hose off going to the motor and there is air coming from the turbo but when you drive it, it wont build boost?! the motor seems to run fine. It did have a super chip in it that was taken out before I got it but im going to get it back but I would think that it should run fine without it right? I dont think that the SES light is on Ill go check and verifi that the light is not on when it runs.

Re: 01 F-550 Rollback no boost turbo not home?!?!?!

Doesn't matter if the CEL is on or not... this is no indication of DTCs stored. Scan codes... On demand codes first so you can see what IDM codes may be stored (if we scan and clear coninuous or memory codes first, the IDM codes will be lost). After we recoerd any On Demand codes, we can proceed to memory codes and then on to engine running codes (any codes retrieved here will be hard or on demand codes).

First and foremost... inspect everything closely. The up tubes on these motors love to leak.... the back end of the left (drivers) manifold like to do that too... The exhaust (pre-turbo) needs desparately to have NO LEAKS AT ALL. Exhaust leaks are the number one cause of poor/no boost.

Important to remember... no boost is not a sure sign of turbo failure.... many operating conditions affect the amount of boost delivered. We should always be sure that our base engine is good before venturing into the electronic la-la-land.

Re: 01 F-550 Rollback no boost turbo not home?!?!?!

Ok well the truck is a 03 I typed that wrong sorry I just put a boost gauge on the map line and it is 5 pounds at 2000 rpm and 10 at 3000 rpm. I found a exhaust leak at the pass side rear manifold right at the block rear most cylinder I cant scan codes I need to get my scanner to do that the motor seems to run all right no weird noises just no power. And the light is not on when it runs. what else could I check? Also could the waste gate be doing it? how does it work? is it close all of the time and when there is to much boost it dumps then? how does it work? is closed all the way toward the drivers side? Thanks!!!! thans grampa jim I guess thats next...codes I mean.

Re: 01 F-550 Rollback no boost turbo not home?!?!?!

would the chip have anything to do with it?
what about a fuel filter?
What if the injectors were not providind enought fuel?
more fuel=more heat=more boost.

Re: 01 F-550 Rollback no boost turbo not home?!?!?!

First off,

Go to a hardware store and build this

Then follow these instructions to the letter. Thanks to Dieselsite (Bob) for the information.

SPECIAL NOTE: Got a boost leak you can't find? Assemble a kit similar to the one shown above and attach it to the turbo inlet. Make sure it's clamped tight. Set the regulator on your air compressor to 20 psi. Slowly open the valve and let the air into the turbo. If you have a leak, no matter how small, it will be come apparent in a second or two. Do not keep the turbo pressurized for more than 30 seconds at a time as you are spinning the turbo with no fresh oil circulating. You'd be amazed just how small of a leak you can quickly locate with this method.

I chased boost leaks for almost a month. This procedure found all three in 10 minutes. It is just too hard to hear or feel a leak with the engine running.

Hope this helps,

Tom

do you think I have a boost leak?
also how does this work? do you have to disconect the hose going in to the motor and plug it?

Just take off the hose on the intake side of the turbo and clamp this on. Be sure you turn your air compressor down to 20#'s and do not spin the turbo more than 30 seconds without a break.

If you are getting plenty of fuel (fuel filter is good right?) Then my next guess would be boost leak.

This is a cheap and easy test. I don't think I spent $6.00 on this test head. If nothing else you will have eliminated boost leak as a problem.

On Edit: I forgot. Get a spray bottle and fill it with soapy water.

Re: 01 F-550 Rollback no boost turbo not home?!?!?!

First-These boost numbers you stated, are you just sitting still revving the engine in neutral? or are you applying a load to the engine? You MUST put the engine under load to build good boost. Otherwise the engine will not make more then 10psi of boost.
Check for exhaust leaks going to the turbo, then do the boost leak test. After those tests try these suggestions; (in order of simple to difficult)
-Check the air filter for restriction.
-Check for excessive blow by.
-Do a flow test of the intercooler, it could be clogged.
-Have you looked at the turbine wheel? This requires removing the exhaust and looking in at it. Maybe it is damaged (melted).
-Do a compression test and leak down test on the engine.

Re: 01 F-550 Rollback no boost turbo not home?!?!?!

had similar problem ,when scanned I had dropped a MAP sensor and EBP sensor which eliminated all boost,,truck drove like a brick.Wouldn't build an ounce. Scan it..........

Re: 01 F-550 Rollback no boost turbo not home?!?!?!

The boost readings that I had were from driving it. I took a vacume and blew through the intecooled and lots of air ran throught it. the turbine wheel hummmm didnt think of that onr like when it was chiped they melted the wheel good one i willl pass that on to ford thanks.
