'03 F250 w/7.3L - Issues?

I am getting ready to look at a 2003 F250 with the 7.3L. It has 77K on it. They want 19 grand.

Anything in particular I should look for? Any issues with that engine/year combination? The 6.0s are a dime a dozen around here but I can't bring myself to spend money on one given the issues they have had.

I will be using the truck as my daily driver and occassionaly towing a 8000 lb camper.

Thanks in advance for any advice for a newb!!!

19 grand? as in 19,000 dollars? It'd better have gold plated everything. I know I got a good deal on mine, but I paid less than half that and mine is in near perfect shape. I think I would keep shopping. You are right about going for the 7.3, and the '03 had all the kinks worked out of it, but for that kind of money - I'd want two trucks....

Thanks guys for the replies!!!

I looked at the truck today and although it looked OK, it was a bit small for my taste. My 1/2 ton Ram is bigger and has more cabin space.

Time to move on to another one!!

What model is it/ Reg cab, ext or crew? 2wd or 4d? XL - Lariat?

A crew cab 4x4 lariat with 77K will bring well over 20K here in GA. I just sold one of mine -03 Crew Cab 4x4 Lariat for 18,000 with 138K miles. I had tons of calls day one and the 1st guy to look bought it. People are wanting the 7.3's bad here.

It was the extended cab. pretty basic overall - cloth seats, 4x2, etc. I put the driver seat all the way back and it had only six or eight inches to the back seat. That's pretty much what did it for me. No one could sit back there comfortably!!

I just bought an 03 F350 CC Lariat 7.3 4x4 with 93000 mile on it last week for $18,000. It is extremely clean with only a few minor issues I can fix.

Be VERY selective when you shop and don't be afraid to wait for the right truck, there are millions of them out there. Good call on going with the 7.3. Only time will tell how the new ones do on the long haul.

Check Craig's list multiple times per day and look in different cities. When you see something that grabs your eye, act fast. If you don't someone else will. I looked at a truck 100 miles away the same day the ad was listed by a guy in NJ who just didn't want his payment anymore. He got many calls but I got out there first and checked it out and we agreed on the sale.

Be mentally ready to go through a bunch of trucks before you find the right one for you. I bought a creeper just so I could get under the trucks I was looking at and was AMAZED at what I found. Looked great from up top but looking from the underside you see the trans leaks, pinion seal leaks, engine pan rust, and major frame/body RUST! One was being sold for top dollar (dealer) and underneath was so rusted that a mechanic said he would only give it 2-3 years before the frame wouldn't pass inspection (that's when i got the creeper and started doing it myself).

I STRONGLY recommend checking out Bill's site at powerstrokehelp dot com. He has a few videos on how to buy and what to look for and avoid. This is my first PSD and I am very excited about the truck. I've been wanting one for a few years and looking for one for about 4 months. Don't be in a hurry and know exactly what you want and what your willing to be flexible on before you shop.

Congratulations on the upgrade - time to get that nasty thing out of your signature...

I totally agree. I would look for people trying to sell '03 2wd extended cabs for $19,000.00, and steer the hell away from them. These trucks are awesome, but that guys crazy. Don't let yourself get taken advantage of. Keep looking, and you'll find a way better deal.

Low mileage is kinda nice, but not super important if it's well maintained. Lot's of folks have put well over half a million miles on these trucks, and still going strong. I have over 210,000 miles on mine, and I swear it just keeps running better all the time. I probably won't live long enough to wear it out, but I'll try.

If you want more cabin space, look for a crew cab, they're huge inside compared to the Dodges, with the exception of their mega cab, but it only comes with a shortbox.
