2000 hard start

Just bought a 2000 with a 7.3. Previous owner said it would start on starting fluid only. I did get it to start with starting fluid and it also had to be plugged in and it still started hard. Vehicle has 493,000 on orignal engine it did run ok and started fine once warmed up was a little short on power but it may just be a little weak. I guessing hpop how do I diagnose this? thanks

Using "starting fluid" is the best way I know of to blow your engine to pieces. Don't use it. I would suggest that the "glow plug" system is your problem. Start with the glow plug ralay (GPR) and then to the glow plug themselves. If it is hard to start cold and starts fine when hot, you describe to me, that it is only the glow plug system. Again, no starting fluid. Very dangerous on a turbo engine. Hope this helps.

An inexpensive test would be to pull the valve covers & observe the oil spill spouts on the injectors ,, they should all be spilling oil evenly ,,,If not ,it may be a poppet issue..

Check the GP's & the GPR first ....
