2001 7.3 PSD cold start issue

OK I know this topic is flooded all over the net. So this is my attempt to get a solid correct answer besides swapping parts.
Truck runs great if I get it started.
Here are symptoms.
  • Extremely hard to start when engine is cold
  • It will start fairly quick if plugged in all night
  • After running there is no issues with starting unless sits over night
  • Batteries good and engine cranks fast
Tests and parts I have replaced
  • Replaced GPM (Glow Plug Module) I do not have the relay as most seem to have on their engines. I did replace this unit for $180.
  • Replaced Glow plugs all 8 this morning. Since they where cheap enough it did not hurt the wallet. $11 each
  • Replaced crank position sensor. Bought at Ford dealer $32. Tach moves when engine is cranking
  • Checked the HPOR and it has oil about 1/2" from top.
Now what is left to check besides doing a buzz test to rule out injectors?
Also if truck runs fine and does not run rough could injectors still be bad?
If anyone lives near Manassas,Va and has Autoenginuity scan tool software or another diagnostic tool to perform test that would be great.
I appreciate any good feedback.

I have an 01 PSD and had the same issue 2 years ago. But it was the Glow Plug Relay in my case. Would just crank and crank till I thought I was going to burn up the starter. Ohmed the glowplugs and they all tested okay. Figured it had to be the Relay since I didn't have any way of testing it. Changed it on a hunch. Next question I have would be is it getting fuel? If cranking for an extended period are you getting white smoke out of the tailpipe. If so, then you are probably getting fuel. Some stations are allowed to add up to 5% Biodiesel without labeling the fuel. If it gets below 20' the animal fat gels. blocking your fuel filter. Just a guess. Here in CO they were mixing biodiesel at some stations without any notification and then said they were not responsible. Just a thought

High mileage injectors? If they get high enough, they struggle when cold but run just fine when warm. They'll pass a buzz test, which is subjective. If all the injectors are equally bad, they'll all sound the same and appear to be fine.

new info

This morning I decided to switch out old GPM to see if I missed diagnosed. Once installed it threw P0683 code. So I ruled out GPM. Installed the new one I had on previously.
Also to tested fuel pump I drained fuel filter bowl. It filled right up once ignition was on. So I believe all is good there.
Truck did start eventually so I have let run to warm up and it starts right as usual. True test will be in the morning.
I made decide to give in an take the truck in to dealer for diagnostic check to just end the madness.

Are you positive that both batteries are good? Even if batteries are good, take each battery cable off and clean each post & cable lug to rule out poor connections.

I had the same problem. Replaced my GPR and fixed a problem I've had since last winter. $45 and it's easy to test it with a volt meter.
